Exploring the Humanities

Throughout my humanities class, students will be introduced to an integrated curriculum of reading, writing, and social studies. Each of them will learn to be independent readers, writers, and thinkers as each analyze topics and concepts focused on one major idea and a few essential questions. As we practice and gear our students towards the development of skills outlined in the Profile of a Ramsey Graduate, students will learn how to communicate, collaborate, think critically, be empathetic and adaptable, self-direct and reflect, be creative, responsible, and maintain a strong academic mindset.

In Reading, students will continue to practice strategies of the Reading Workshop by engaging in mini lessons and utilizing strategies that follow the Understanding by Design framework. Through this, students will be able to comprehend and analyze both literal and informational texts by thinking critically, collaborating, and personally connecting to texts. This will further develop their own personal character, and social connection.

In Writing, students will continue to practice the outline of the Writing Workshop, in which the goal is to develop life-long learners that can independently develop their own narratives, as well as informational and argumentative pieces. Each student will be able to conduct research, be creative and innovative, generate new ideas, collaborate and communicate, and use information and communication technology to support their learning.

In Social Studies, students will develop a strong background in essential content knowledge by exploring economics, early colonization, a focus on history in New Jersey, and government. This will further grow each of their social responsibility, and build active citizenship. Supported through the NJ Standards, students will develop a deeper knowledge and understanding about the world around them by generating their own ideas and understanding essential topics.
