Code of Conduct

What is the purpose of a Code of Conduct?

  • Sets expectations for workplace behavior

  • Creates a safe, inclusive and respectful environment

  • Articulates shared values and principles

  • Provides guidance on reporting and responding to unwelcome behavior

  • Defines your culture and standards for newcomers and visitors

  • Helps to identify, address and prevent inappropriate behaviors

What constitutes an effective Code of Conduct?

  • Describes the shared mission/values of the group

  • Identifies and defines appropriate and inappropriate behaviors

  • Clearly describes reporting and investigative procedures

  • Outlines the consequences of violations*

  • Protects against retaliation (more than one avenue for reporting)

  • Has a built in mechanism for regular review and revision

*It is recommended that Zero Tolerance Policies be avoided because they are difficult to enforce equitably
