What is the purpose of a Code of Conduct?
Sets expectations for workplace behavior
Creates a safe, inclusive and respectful environment
Articulates shared values and principles
Provides guidance on reporting and responding to unwelcome behavior
Defines your culture and standards for newcomers and visitors
Helps to identify, address and prevent inappropriate behaviors
What constitutes an effective Code of Conduct?
Describes the shared mission/values of the group
Identifies and defines appropriate and inappropriate behaviors
Clearly describes reporting and investigative procedures
Outlines the consequences of violations*
Protects against retaliation (more than one avenue for reporting)
Has a built in mechanism for regular review and revision
*It is recommended that Zero Tolerance Policies be avoided because they are difficult to enforce equitably
