Greetings MVA Community!
This newsletter comes out every Sunday evening to keep you informed of upcoming events and to celebrate highlights of recent happenings and celebrations. We also have a live link on the MVA Website. This week features (click the title to jump to a section):
Tuesday is wear orange day for Kinder students! Celebrate learning our colors!
More time to READ and RAISE!!
Our Read-a-Thon is being extended through November 7th!!! Students can log as many reading minutes as they can while raising funds for our school! Families and friends can pledge per minute or give a flat donation through each student's personalized online page.
Proceeds go directly to support our School Library and this event is proudly brought to you by your RCC PTSA.

Extras are starting with an couple of great sessions this month!
Wednesday 10/29, 12:00-1:00 "Paper Fidgets" is a sensory guessing game and a small snack is part of this activity!
Nov 5, Ceramic Ornaments (pt.1) Children will be making a ceramic holiday ornament that can get fired in the school kiln. There will be a pt.2 coming up in December to glaze them in time for the winter break.
Nov 12, Side Silhouettes (pt.1) We'll start the process of making silhouette outlines and use shadows and toy animals to explore light and tracing. There will be a pt.2 coming up to fill-in the silhouettes!
Nov 19, Pine Cone Turkeys and Poetry Reading Each child will have the chance to make a pine-cone turkey ornament for their Thanksgiving table, and some student volunteers will perform a themed poetry reading.
You must have a returned permission slip in order to attend any Weds Extra activity. (One permission slip covers the entire year). Parents attending with their child need to have volunteer clearance. It is not required that you attend. If your child is attending, they will eat lunch from 11:30-12:00 (you can pack them a lunch or they can get lunch from the cafeteria) and then participate in the activity from 12-1:00. You will pick up your student on the grassy area (where regular pick up is) at 1:00.
We are so appreciative of Lesley Lay and Dustin Long, two wonderful parent volunteers and all they have done to get this enrichment experience up and running!

Families can earn raffle tickets for the end of the year Volunteer Gift Basket! Earn 1 ticket per member just for attending and earn an additional ticket for each member that signs up for an event committee.
Ramona Family Naturals will be hosting us on their patio at 5pm on November 5th. There will be light refreshments from PTSA and Family’s can purchase Dinner from RFN until the kitchen closes at 6pm. There will also be an opportunity for volunteers to ask questions and present their creative ideas that will enhance their Student’s Core Memories of this school year!

We have an upcoming 4-day weekend. There will be no school on Monday, November 10th and Tuesday November 11th, in observance of Admissions Day (Nov 10) and Veteran's Day (Nov 11). We hope you enjoy your time together as a family, with extra time to celebrate and honor all who have served.
The Ramona Community Campus PTSA is placing another spirit wear order soon. Please place your order by Nov 7th to have spirit wear before the holidays - these can be fun holiday gifts for students! Sizes range from Youth Small to Adult 3XL.

Our PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) is already planning and preparing for lots of fun and opportunities to connect with each other through a slate of monthly events:
October 10: Fall Carnival,
November 14: Tie Dye Night,
December 5: Craft Night,
January 23: Family Game Night,
February 20: Family Movie Night,
March 20: Pasta Dinner Fundraiser
Events are open to all students and their families. Your membership helps underwrite these events, assemblies and other supports to our classrooms. Parent volunteers are needed to also make the events successful.
We are very happy to welcome volunteers to our campus.
Level One volunteers must go through a clearance process which includes: photo identification, negative tuberculosis test, the clearance process takes a few days. Pick up a volunteer packet in our main office if you are interested.
Level Two volunteers also require a physical and fingerprint clearance. Not all classrooms use parent volunteers, and some teachers prefer to wait a few weeks before introducing another adult in the classroom.
Just ask your child’s teacher how you can help if you are interested in volunteering.
Food Services continues to offer FREE lunches for all students. Breakfast is served from 7:45-8:30 am. Students are always welcome to bring a lunch and snacks from home.
We welcome families to eat with their student. Please following these guidelines:
Breakfast: please eat with your students in the lunch table area and enjoy your time together as a family. Please refrain from interacting with other students who are not also accompanied by their parent/guardian.
Lunch: please eat with your students picnic-style on the front grass area, under the trees in front of the "Ramona Community Campus" wall sign and school marquee. Feel free to bring blankets or chairs. Refer to the Student Hours and Bell Schedule for grade level lunch times.
We have several students this year with very severe nut allergies. The cafeteria will not be serving foods with nut-based ingredients. Please consider, whenever possible, packing lunches and snacks for your child that do not pose a risk to those with nut allergies.
Mountain Valley Academy has a reputation for academic rigor and excellent citizenship. We believe that excellence begins with having clear expectations and being clear on how we live our values - Clear is Kind! This week Mrs. Sawada visited classrooms, grades 8-12, to review our campus expectations and discuss how our expectations play out in daily campus life.
You can review the Expectations discussion in the attached slides. In this discussion, we particularly emphasized the NO Cell Phone use during instructional time policy (unless directed by the teacher) and the dress code policy. We also reviewed the MVA Academic Integrity Code which we emphasized appropriate use of AI to assist learning but not replace learning.
In the spirit of our belief that Clear is Kind, please let us know what further clarification we can provide to these expectations.
Adding a course must occur within the first two weeks of each semester. After two weeks, you will not be allowed to add any courses.
Students in grades 9 and 10 must take a minimum of six (6) classes. Students in grades 9 and 10 may not drop a course if it will take them below the 6 class minimum.
Courses may be dropped through the fourth (4th) week of each semester. By tracking the student progress/grade earned in each course, families have the opportunity to evaluate whether or not the student desires to continue to be enrolled in a specific class. MVA high school students have until the end of the fourth week of each semester to drop classes without earning a failing grade. Students who drop a class after the fourth week will have a Withdrawal/Fail on their transcript for that course.
If you have any questions regarding your student’s schedule, please make an appointment to meet with your advising teacher immediately.
MVA is a rare and unique place for learning. Our alternative school incorporates a non-threatening, flexible environment that fosters self-motivation and responsibility for students' own learning. Parents are considered partners in their child’s education, working actively with teachers for the good of the student.
We want to make sure that all students complete each semester earning full credits and are on track for graduation and beyond. We are here to provide extra support to students needing to raise their grades.
To participate in privileges associated with the Independent Study program, students must remain in good academic standing, with no more than two Ds and/or no Fs. Students not in good academic standing, will not be permitted to leave campus early without a parent signing out the student, study hall and tutorials will be required during any free periods, cell phone use will not be permitted while on campus, and the student will not be able to participate in extracurricular activities or school-sponsored events.
Please communicate often with your teachers and advisor to ensure your student is on track.
Every year, volunteers work with students at RCC by reading with and/or mentoring 1st-3rd grade students. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get some extra support when needed.

If using the pick up lane, you may only pick up at the curb in one of the 4 marked spaces. There is no loading unless your are in one of these 4 spaces.
The pick up line at the curb is for immediate loading only. If your student is not waiting on the sidewalk for pick up, please park to wait for your student to come out.
Handicapped spaces are for vehicles with handicapped placards only. Please do not idle or park in these spaces unless you have a valid handicapped placard on display.
Please take a moment to review the protocols below to ensure that we keep all students safe and maintain maximum efficiency.
It is no secret that our parking lot can be a challenge during drop off and pick up times. As we share the campus with our sister school, Ramona Community Montessori School, we have strategically timed our MVA and RCMS arrival and dismissal times in order to minimize the traffic as much as possible. Please show extra grace and courtesy during the busiest times in the parking lot and follow these protocols:
NEW THIS YEAR: we have adjusted the middle row in the parking lot to be one way (southbound) only. If you pass through the middle parking row, please exit at the south into the inside lane for flowing traffic.
The inside lane is for flowing traffic only - students may not enter or exit cars from the inside lane, only the outside lane (curbside).
The school-side curb is for IMMEDIATE loading and unloading ONLY.
If your student is not in front of the school ready and waiting for pick up, please park in an available parking space to wait for their arrival.
Please abide by all traffic laws. Do not enter the parking lot using the exit lane, and do not turn left when exiting the parking lot.
Pedestrians, please use the blue crosswalk in the parking lot to enter and exit campus. Do not walk in-between cars in the pick up line. This is not only dangerous for you and drivers, this also slows down the flow of traffic.
If a friend or family member is picking up your student, please make sure they are aware of and follow the parking lot protocols.

Safety, patience, and civility, please
Please refer to the map above while you carefully read the following protocols for the parking lot. We have made some adjustments in an effort to maximize safety and efficiency.
Please arrive at a time appropriate for your program’s dismissal – Not too early, please. MVA Elementary is released at 1:45 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 11:30 on Wednesdays. Montessori is released at 2:30 pm on Mondays/Tuesdays/Thursdays/Fridays and 12:02 on Wednesdays.
Incoming: Do not turn left at the top of the driveway. Please get into line or drive straight ahead to park.
The middle parking aisle is now one way only. When exiting the middle aisle, move south only and turn left to enter the "inside lane" for through traffic only.
If in the curbside pick up line, please pull forward as far as possible (the first three cars should be north of the crosswalk at the three lone zone signs). On Wednesdays, early RCMS folk should park to the right on the south side and allow MVA families to move through for pick ups.
If you park in the northwest parking “pocket” to exit please drive forward and move through the inside lane to merge and exit.
Students will be loaded into cars only at the curb in one of the four loading spaces (marked by the large signs).
When we begin matching children and cars, it only takes 15 minutes to empty the lot.
When exiting the parking lot you may only turn right onto Ramona Street.

The INSIDE LANE (viewed below on the left) is for Through Traffic ONLY. Students may NOT enter cars in this lane.
The OUTSIDE LANE (viewed below on the right) is for immediate pick up only. If your student is not waiting on the sidewalk, please park to wait for your student.
It is a RIGHT TURN ONLY when exiting the parking lot.
When crossing Ramona Street as a pedestrian, use the flags provided to increase visibility. After crossing, leave the flag in the bucket on the other side.
The middle parking aisle is now ONE WAY only. Please exit at the south end and turn left into the through traffic only lane.
At the south end of the parking keep to the right if you are picking up curbside (outside lane).
Keep to the left if you are exiting and driving through (inside lane).
We encourage our students to be up-standers and if they "See Something, Say Something" to reduce bullying on our campus. We investigate all instances of bullying that are reported to our school site. If there are any concerns please email our counselor, Ms. Bishop or Principal, Mrs. Sawada, and/or complete the bullying reporting form: Online Bullying Reporting Form (If you are a parent assisting your child with completing the form, you must be signed in to their student email.)
