Second graders showed off their dancing skills during our warm-up that included the Cha-Cha slide. They also worked on their accuracy skills during our football unit. They worked during a relay perfecting their throwing and catching skills, earning points for every successful throw and catch. The students moved on to fun games like Football Island and Triangle Football.

This month, our young scientists will continue to explore the incredible diversity of animals and habitats around us. We'll start by investigating animal classification, learning about the unique traits that define each animal group, from mammals to birds. Then, we'll dive into different habitats to see how both the living parts (like plants and other animals) and non-living parts (like rocks and water) affect the organisms that live there. To cap off the unit, students will use all their knowledge to design a bird feeder specifically tailored to attract birds with certain food preferences!

Nadine_2_bs.movOur second graders are diving into the world of stop motion animation, experimenting with different materials to create fun, frame-by-frame stories. Students are learning the basic principles of stop motion, including the key idea that 12 frames per second equals 12 photos for just 1 second of animation. With each new task, they are challenged to capture even more frames and make their animations more detailed and precise.
As we move forward in our stop-motion unit, 2nd graders will get even more creative by using whiteboards as their canvas. They'll explore the magic of transitions, learning how to smoothly shift from one idea to the next, and adding even more exciting elements to their animations. It’s an exciting time for our young creators to bring their stories to life, one frame at a time!

Second graders are working on their colorful beehive drawings, where we explored oil pastel techniques such as blending, smudging, layering, and color mixing. Students practiced controlling pressure and experimenting with warm and cool colors to create depth and texture. Next, they will move into underwater mixed-media collages, combining drawing, painting, and collage materials.

This month second graders prepared for a visit from the bestselling and award-winning author Adam Gidwitz. Together as a class we read the first book in his Unicorn Rescue Society series to learn about character building and continue our exploration of different genres with this fantasy/adventure story. We also spent time examining Adam’s official author website to discuss finding accurate and reliable information on a professional writer. Second graders then workshopped unique questions to ask during Adam’s presentations. The event was a huge success with Adam discussing his story and explaining how all of us are writers, whether we know it or not. Second graders had a blast!
2nd graders have been learning about the many sonic and emotional qualities of music, and how to develop a shared musical language we can use to describe and appreciate music. Each week, we listen to a piece of a different genre and era and write down what we are hearing- is the music slow or fast? Soft or loud? Are the notes smooth or separated? And lastly, the most subjective question- how does the music make you feel? Some answers from 2nd graders have included- “it makes me feel like something exciting is about to happen”, “it sounds mystical and mysterious”, or “it sounds like a celebration!” The students have been very thoughtful and perceptive in their responses, and we look forward to these rich discussions each week.
The 2nd graders have also been learning about quarter notes and eighth notes and how to play those note values on the drums, claves, and boomwhackers. Soon we will learn about 16th notes and quarter rests!
