Period 5:

English 9R

Materials Needed:

For this class, you will need the following items:

  1. pens and pencils

  2. 3 ring loose-leaf notebook and paper

  3. a pocket folder

  4. post-its (package of 3 or more)

  5. highlighters (at least 2 different colors)

  6. a homework planner

  7. school issued chromebook or personal laptop (please have fully charged before coming to school each day)

***You will be required to bring these materials to class every day, along with all current reading materials.***

Grading Policy:

Your quarterly grades will be based on a total points system. This includes tests, writing assignments (ranging from paragraphs to full essays), quizzes, homework (YES, IT COUNTS), class participation, and preparation. Your quarterly grade will be calculated by dividing the number of points you earned by the maximum number of possible points. For example, if you earned 235 points out of 260 points, your grade would be 90% (or an A-).

Homework Policy:

Homework is to be completed on time for full credit. I may ask you to submit some assignments through Google Classroom. Written homework will either be checked at your desk or collected. If homework is not completed on time, you will only receive partial credit. All homework should be neat and legible.

Taking Notes:

Note taking is an essential part of this course. I will model various strategies for note taking. You will be expected to take notes during class.

Tests and Quizzes:

All tests will be announced in advance. Most quizzes will be announced ahead of time; however, there may be unannounced reading quizzes from time to time. Be sure to keep up with your reading assignments on a daily basis in order to prepare for these types of quizzes.

Writing Assignments:

All writing assignments must be submitted on or before the deadline. The SHS English department policy states that for each day that an assignment is late, you will drop a full grade (10 points). If it is not handed in, you will receive a zero for the assignment.

Rules for the Classroom:

  • Courteous behavior is expected always. Disrespect to anyone will not be tolerated. This includes talking while someone else is speaking.

  • Disruptive behavior is unacceptable.

  • Using a cell phone or any other electronic device without permission (including headphones/earbuds) is prohibited during our assigned class time.

  • Come to class prepared and on time every day. Please be in your assigned seat with your materials ready at the bell.

  • If we/you are remote at any point throughout the year, enter our Google Meet with your camera on and your mic muted. Be sure to have all your materials with you.

Absences:

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to email me at mamodeo@sufferncentral.org and I will help you navigate through the material and work you missed. You must also check Google Classroom for the latest updates. Please note: you may email me if you need help with anything throughout the year. Do not hesitate to reach out. I am happy to help! I am also available during unit lunch in the English Office, room 111, on most days, so you may also come and see me then if necessary.
