Programs at Suffern High School
● Skills and Strategies- guides students through skills and strategies that can be used throughout the year, high school career and beyond. Time is set aside to review and prepare for tests/quizzes, and work on essays or projects. Emphasis is placed on college and career exploration and transition planning for life after high school.
● Resource Room-supports the placement of students with disabilities in regular education settings. Students receive specialized instruction for a minimum of three hours weekly. The group size for resource room is limited to five students per period.
● Therapeutic Support Support -a support class which provides a safe environment for students to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. Organization, study skills, stress management, wellbeing, and mindfulness are key components in class activities.
● Co-Teach Classes- delivers specially designed instruction to a group of students with disabilities within the general classroom. The number of students with disabilities assigned to these classes does not exceed 12 students. School personnel assigned to each class include a special education teacher and a general education teacher.
● Self Contained/Learning Center Classes- designed for students who are unable to satisfactorily achieve their education goals in a regular class setting and require additional special educational support services. Students in special classes receive specialized instruction in content and skill areas in the special class
● Study Skills- guides students through skills and strategies that can be used throughout the year, high school career and beyond. Time is set aside to review and prepare for tests/quizzes, and work on essays or projects. A few skills and strategies covered (but not limited to) ; organization, time management, studying, test taking, reading, annotation, advocacy, note taking, creating study guides
● Financial Literacy- designed to introduce students to basic financial literacy skills to help make responsible financial decisions while addressing the five key components of financial literacy: earn, spend, save and invest, borrow, and protect.
Life Skills Literacy-students will develop skills to assist with life outside the classroom. These skills include, but are not limited to, people skills, creating a signature, self-advocacy, executive functioning skills, and daily life skills.
Leadership Seminar-intended to provide students with practical exposure to topics important for individual adjustment beyond high school. Major emphasis is placed upon career awareness and guidance as well as basic employment skills, personal organization, time management and personal business skills and knowledge. This course includes a corporation simulation through project-based learning. In this simulation students will create and run their own company throughout the semester. Students will take part in positions like marketing, accounting, and board of directors, managers, sales, and techs.
● Literacy Seminar- utilizes both the Wilson Reading System and Wilson Just Words System. This class will teach students reading and writing strategies that they can use across content areas. Students will learn the strategies of making connections, asking questions, drawing inferences, making predictions, and visualizing to better understand and learn from what they read.
Math Applications-designed to introduce concepts describing the real world and solving practical problems using mathematics. Students will develop mathematical arguments, problem solve, and explore real and abstract applications, with and without technology.
Science Topics- designed to empower students with regards to contemporary issues in science. Students will be exposed to current science issues, research them to learn more, and complete work and projects to demonstrate their knowledge and opinions on the topics. Students will also learn how to use the various technological resources available to them.
Math Topics - designed to emphasize the study of the properties and applications of geometric concepts. It includes reviewing the study of lines and continuing to determine linear relationships. The properties of two and three dimensional figures are explored through problem solving and applications.
Science Applications-this course is a non-Regents course. The premise of this course is to discover the many ways science is applied to our everyday lives.
