As a non-litigating advocate with expertise in teaching, learning, and school leadership, I work alongside families to ensure students receive the educational services and accommodations they deserve. While I do not represent clients in court, my role is to help parents navigate the often quite-complex processes involved in securing educational supports, especially for students with special needs. I guide families through the regulations and legal frameworks governing education, using my knowledge of curriculum theory and teacher practice, to make sure students can fully access and benefit from their education.
Here’s how I support families:
IEP and 504 Plan Guidance: I help parents or caregivers understand and effectively navigate the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and 504 Plan processes. I translate evaluations and jargon into clear language, ensuring that plans are truly individualized and reflect the student's strengths and areas of need. I actively participate in meetings to advocate for goals and services that directly support the student’s academic and social success.
Ensuring FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education): My role is to ensure that schools are meeting their obligation to provide a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). I help families secure the accommodations, modifications, and services that students need to access the general curriculum. By focusing on each student's right to equitable education, I work to ensure they receive the individualized instruction and supports that are required by law.
Advocating for Curriculum and Instructional Adjustments: With my deep understanding of curriculum theory and instructional practices, I advocate for changes that directly impact the quality of education a student receives. I ensure that teaching strategies, resources, and assessments are aligned with the student's learning needs and are delivered in ways that allow them to access the full curriculum. This includes pushing for differentiated instruction (including using intervention frameworks known as MTSS-RtII before referrals occur), alternative materials, and assistive technology when necessary.
Educating Parents on Educational Right: I empower parents by explaining their rights, as well as their child’s rights, under laws such as IDEA, Section 504, and ADA. I clarify complex regulations, ensure they understand procedural safeguards, and help them make informed decisions. My goal is to give parents the tools they need to advocate confidently for their child within the school system.
Facilitating Productive School Meetings: I attend IEP meetings and other school-related discussions with parents, using my experience in school leadership to facilitate clear, effective communication between families and educators. My focus is on ensuring that the family’s voice is heard, concerns are addressed, and that all decisions are student-centered. I help frame discussions around the child’s strengths and needs, pushing for meaningful outcomes.
Resolving Conflicts Through Mediation: When disagreements arise between families and schools, I help mediate and resolve these conflicts, ensuring that the student’s best interests are at the forefront. While I do not litigate, I work hard to find collaborative solutions that avoid legal disputes, using my leadership skills to navigate difficult conversations and secure the necessary supports for the child.
In my role, I aim to ensure that every student, particularly those with disabilities, learning challenges, or other specialized needs, receives the education to which they are entitled. I draw on my expertise in curriculum, instruction, and school leadership to advocate for policies and practices that support each student’s growth and development. My goal is to empower families to engage with schools effectively, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed academically and socially.
