Meals on Wheels

Who is Served?

Homebound individuals living in the City of Radford or the central area of Fairlawn may contact us to determine eligibility for home delivery.

There is no fee for this service.

Many of our neighbors are elderly and living alone. Many have difficulty walking or standing long enough to safely cook meals in their home.  Some do have family, neighbors, or aides to assist them. In that case, the daily lunch not only benefits the recipient but also offers the caregiver a bit of relief.  The delivery of a meal by a friendly neighbor provides a welcome social contact for some individuals.

To Request Service:

Call (540) 838-0310

Please leave your name and a phone number where you can be reached.

Meals are delivered each weekday, Monday-Friday, except New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day, and when Radford City Public Schools are closed due to hazardous weather.

Recipients or caregivers should make every effort to contact us in advance when they will not need meal delivery. When no one answers the door to receive a scheduled meal delivery we do our best to reach the individual or their primary contact to trigger a safety check.

Meals

We cook one meal each week day.  Diverse dietary preferences cannot be accommodated with donated food.  We do not add salt to dishes prepared in the kitchen, however some canned or packaged items included may already contain salt.  Fresh or canned fruit is sometimes available.

Examples of meals are:

- Chicken on whole wheat bread with gravy, mashed potatoes, greens.

- Spaghetti with meat sauce, roll, fresh garden salad, fruit.

Homebound individuals 60 years or older who prefer meals meeting nutritional standards may wish to contact the New River Valley Agency on Aging, another provider of homebound meals which meet strict nutritional requirements.

It is up to the volunteers and the recipients if they choose to chat for awhile when meals are delivered.

We do not deliver meals when Radford City Public Schools are closed due to hazardous weather.
