Abstract

My name is Elicia German, and I am an AP Research student as well as an AP Capstone candidate. My research project is on the topic of sustainable architecture, and specifically on the potential of the ambitious, yet extremely theoretical, arcology. This is a a self-sustainable structure with the ability to house a high-density population at a low ecological impact, and my thesis is that its implementation has the potential to address environmental and sociological flaws in society, including climate change, food and resource shortage, and general/increasing overpopulation within cities. I am taking a mixed approach with my research methodology, and the combined methods I will be employing are the historical and exploratory. This will be done under a theoretical framework. It will entail an evaluation of past and present high-density structures as well as alleged ecological cities, and the pros and cons of these items will be used for the exploration of potential elements to be used in the design of feasible arcologies. The demonstration of these elements in possible action will be in the form of two to four plans for either arcology structures in hostile locations, or improvements upon currently or formerly existing cities that fit one of the two categories, high-density structure or eco-city.
