Excerpt
Matt limped down the hallway. The odd shuffle and dragging sound of his boots followed him to the last room. Clenching his throbbing side, he wondered when the pain would return, when the numbness would leave his body... and his mind. He put a hand on the doorknob and gave it a gentle turn.
“I need a moment,” he snarled to the deputy watching over Albert, who looked as though he thought Albert had the strength to take flight.
“Well, I’m ‘sposed to...” the deputy began.
“What’s he gonna do, climb out the window?” Matt interrupted, motioning from Albert to the locked window.
The deputy frowned. “Well, I guess I could...”
“Good. Then go guard the hall,” Matt said as he gently shoved the deputy toward the hallway and shut the door. The man didn’t even have time to finish his thought.
Albert managed a weak grin and clutched the bloody spot on his chest. “Stop,” he wheezed between pained chuckles. “It hurts to laugh.”
Matt dragged over a chair from the corner and lowered himself onto it with a stiff grunt. His hand went instinctively to his side, pressing to the bandages that had already soaked through. For a moment he just sat there, watching Albert breathe.
“You look worse than I do,” Albert mumbled, half grinning through the haze of morphine and pain.
“Yeah, well. I’m not the one with a bullet in my chest.” Matt tried to lean forward, but couldn’t, then grinned. “You always did have to outdo me.”
Albert chuckled softly, then winced, pressing his hand tighter over his wound. “You come out here just to insult me?”
A seriousness took hold of Matt, and Albert’s eyes flickered then lowered.

Raised on the beaches of South Texas, R.G. Stanford has always been drawn to stories that transcend time. That passion was ignited in 1976 with the discovery of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, and deepened with The Feast of All Saints just a few years later. Though historical fiction wasn’t an immediate calling, a personal journey into genealogy changed everything.
With no close relatives nearby, R.G. Stanford turned to online resources in search of extended family. That search became a twenty-year journey through genealogy websites, Federal Census records, the National Archives, and old newspapers. Along the way, R.G. Stanford uncovered incredible stories about her family and the people who once lived in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory.
Compelled to record the truth of her family in the lore, sprinkled with imagination, R.G. Stanford is a history lover, a research buff, and a passionate genealogy enthusiast. She is also a mother, a grandmother, and a teller of stories, now living near Orlando.
