What Every Parent Should Know About Education, Career Readiness, and Student Success

Date Published: August 21, 2026
A student’s future is shaped by far more than grades, test scores, and what happens inside a classroom.
Beyond the Classroom is a practical guide for parents, guardians, and families who want to better understand today’s education system—and help their children make informed decisions about what comes next.
Drawing on experience in education, career development, higher education, and workforce preparation, Rob Gowen takes readers behind the scenes of the school system and explains the opportunities, decisions, and challenges families may encounter throughout a student’s educational journey.
From understanding how schools operate and knowing your rights as a parent to exploring college, career and technical education, apprenticeships, military service, and direct-to-workforce pathways, this book provides families with information they can actually use.
Inside, you'll explore topics including:
· Understanding how today's schools operate
· Building productive relationships with teachers, counselors, and administrators
· Preparing students for college without assuming college is the only path to success
· Career and technical education, certifications, apprenticeships, and skilled trades
· Career exploration and workforce readiness
· Financial literacy and the cost of education
· Helping students develop independence, responsibility, and real-world skills
· Asking the right questions before important educational and career decisions
There is no single definition of success—and there is no single path every student should follow.
Beyond the Classroom helps families look beyond graduation requirements and focus on the larger goal: preparing young people to make informed choices, recognize their opportunities, and build successful lives after high school.
Because education should prepare students not only for the next test—but for what comes next.

About the Author
Rob Gowen has been working in the field of education, career planning, and life-long learning for many years, guiding students, families, and educators through one of the sometimes-complex worlds. He has worked in a variety of fields from K–12 education to higher education, workforce development, hospitality education and military service, and has a practical, real world approach to the challenges families face in helping prepare young people for success.
Currently, Rob is working as a Career Coach in Maryland where he meets with students and families individually to discuss college planning, career exploration, military, apprenticeships, financial literacy, employability skills, and postsecondary decision making. Throughout his career he has assisted thousands of students to define their strengths, research career options, compile resumes, practice interviews and make sound career choices.
Prior to being in the K–12 sector, Rob had experience in higher education, career and technical education, workforce development, hospitality management and food systems. His varied work experience enables him to connect the dots between school and work and to educate families on the impact of choices today and opportunities tomorrow.
Rob is a proud United States Coast Guard veteran, and he attributes his service to the development of his values of leadership, service, discipline and ongoing education. Those experiences continue to impact the way he works professionally and how he helps his students create successful futures.
Beyond the Classroom has been written to convey clear, non-partisan, and practical information for parents on today's educational system. Rob's goal is not to focus on politics or ideology, but to educate families about the nature of schools, to identify opportunities for their children, to be effective advocates, and to prepare for college, careers, military service or the workforce.
Rob feels that every pupil should have a plan, every parent should have easy-to-understand information and every family should have the knowledge to make confident decisions about their child's education.
