Waste segregation is the sorting and separation of waste types to facilitate recycling and correct onward disposal.
Segragation is a way to reduce the amount of waste that reaches landfills, thereby taking up less space.
BENEFITS OF SEGREGATION:
1. waste to profit.
2. reduce waste.
3. cleanliness.
4. safety and better health.
5. save cost and time waste.
Segregating waste at home can cause the following:
1. skin irritations.
2. blood infections.
3. respiratory problems.
4. growth problems.
5. reproductive issues.
Based on the survey that we had gathered in purok 6 and 7 at barangay Malimpec, also with our own observation on the people about on how they manage their waste, it shows that most of the people who live in barangay Malimpec in purok 6 and 7 does not know/ practice the segregation of waste. They do not also have a proper compost pit for their trash. Everytime we go to school many garbages was at the side of the road that's include that they don't have a proper compost pit.
Because of this issue my team (Green Builders) decided to set a goal. We will provide a segregation trash that we will place at the side of the road. In this case people passing by will not just throw their waste anywhere. Our team also decided to do clean up drive basing also to the state of the place where in there is so many plastics or any types of trash everywhere that its not pleasing to the eye. People passing by will not just throw their waste anywhere.
When we segregate waste, it reduces the amount of waste that reaches landfills, thereby taking up less space. Pollution of air and water can be considerably reduced when hazardous waste is separated and treated separately. It is essential that waste is put in separate bins so that it can be appropriately dealt with.
The first reason is it is legally required. Under the Waste Regulations 2011, you must segregate paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass at source unless it is technically or economically unfeasible. Under the same regulations, you should implement the waste hierarchy; reduce, reuse, recycle, other recovery and disposal. By law, you should implement this hierarchy and segregation helps with recycling in particular.
Waste segregation is included in law because it is much easier to recycle. Effective segregation of wastes means that less waste goes to landfill which makes it cheaper and better for people and the environment. It is also important to segregate for public health. In particular, hazardous wastes can cause long term health problems, so it is very important that they are disposed of correctly and safely and not mixed in with the normal waste coming out of your home or office.
