CHEM1 focuses on the study of the electronic, atomic and molecular structure of matter. The topics being covered are: Atomic composition and mass spectrometry, theory of light, electronic structure and atomic spectroscopy, periodic table, covalent bond and molecular structure, organic functional groups and infrared spectroscopy, conformational analysis and H-NMR, intermolecular forces and phase change, solutions and solubility.
Spectroscopic techniques are presented from the beginning as tools for evidence and analysis of atomic and molecular structure and composition. Matter will be built from the “nanoscopic” world to macroscopic using the so-called “atoms first” approach. The course should also provide to students a “chemical vision” when observing any change happening in nature. Students will be able to look at the electronic, atomic or molecular structure of matter and build structure-property relationships that explain many of the physical and chemical phenomena.
