The objective of the GeoViz Poster project is to apply map-making and visualization skills to explore and analyze a real-world issue with spatial implications. Students are tasked with developing a workflow that includes data collection, processing, analysis, and visualization to create a poster showcasing their findings. The project encourages independent work, the use of diverse spatial datasets, and the creation of visually compelling graphics to communicate key insights effectively.
For this project, I focused on El Paso County, Colorado, analyzing population growth trends and racial demographic distributions between 2010 and 2020. Using geospatial data from the U.S. Census Bureau, I visualized these patterns through maps and charts created with R and its spatial data packages. My work included mapping the spatial distribution of Black and White populations at the census tract level, identifying areas of demographic clustering, and highlighting shifts in racial diversity over the decade. The final poster provided insights into urban planning and resource allocation, with detailed graphics and a concise narrative explaining the methodology and key findings.
