In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the "Father of Black History, " launched Negro History Week, during the second week of February to commemorate the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. This was a time to celebrate and raise awareness of Black History. In 1976, President Gerald Ford recognized the month of February as Black History Month.
