SPecial Education Services

CST Meetings

  • Annual Reviews for scholars receiving Special Education and Related Services are being held via phone conference and/or zoom with team members and parents/guardians. Attendance will be recorded and the parent will receive a copy of the completed IEP following the meeting.

  • The team is still holding re-evaluation planning meetings for all scholars scheduled for or awaiting a reevaluation to determine what assessments will be necessary to determine if the scholar is still eligible for services. If the team is able to determine the program from the data currently available, the parent and team may waive the re-evaluation if appropriate. If we require further assessments to make the determination, it will be documented in the evaluation plan, and that they will be scheduled once school is permitted to resume due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • If any initial referrals are received during the period of school closure, an identification/evaluation planning meeting will be held within 20 days of receipt of the request. If it is determined that assessments are warranted, a notation will be made stating that once a parent consents and sends it to the district, it will be marked as received 3 business days after QCACS has reopened.

Special Education Instruction

  • Our Special Education teachers have access to all the classes that they provide support to on Google Classroom and are part of each zoom session for ELA and Math to help assist scholars with additional support, provide modifications, and accommodate our learners.

  • All work posted on Google Classroom is being modified to meet the individual specifications of each classified scholar's IEP. This work is posted to them individually so they can complete on Google Classroom.

  • Special Education teachers are in zoom meetings providing In Class Support, which includes working with small groups in breakout sessions, co-teaching with the general education teacher, and helping design instruction.

  • All Resource Teachers will have their own Google Classroom page as well to provide additional resources and supplemental activities to scholars during distance learning including Khan Academy, online resources, and individualized reading activities.

  • In addition to regularly scheduled zoom meetings with their class, the Special Education students are also given additional time to work in small groups or one to one with their Special Education teacher and General Education teacher each week via Zoom. This provides a chance for targeted instruction, as well as helps scholars get clarification on topics they are having difficulty with.

  • Special Education teachers are documenting services as they did prior to school closure, including scholar attendance and work completion. In addition to progress reports and report cards, those scholars eligible for Special Education and Related Services are still receiving progress reports on their individualized goals as per their IEP or service plan.

Related Services

  • All related services currently in scholar's IEPs are being offered remotely through teletherapy since the the new guidance was provided from the NJDOE allowing them to do so. Consent of the parent is required prior to the start of services. All services are being documented so as to ensure that any compensatory services required once school returns can be provided.

  • Any missed related services will be documented and compensatory services will be rescheduled in addition to regularly provided services upon the reopening of school.

Family Support

  • Both Special Education and General Education teachers are reaching out to families of Special Education Scholars by email, phone, remind, and class dojo on a daily basis. Academic support is offered to help scholars, as well as explanations of modifications to parents/guardians who need assistance working with their scholar.

  • The Dean of Scholar Support Services, in conjunction with the Case Manager, personally reaches out to the families of scholars via phone and email to check-in on scholar progress and needs. This includes addressing questions, helping with technology issues, informing families of available food services, and directing families to the counseling department for social/emotional support.

  • The School Counselors do weekly check-ins with scholars to support social and emotional well-being, as well as help alleviate academic burn-out with Special Education scholars and help them deal with stress caused by their new learning environment.
