Canadian Phlebotomy Technician

The phlebotomist is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain patient’s blood specimens by venipuncture and micro-collection for testing purposes. 

This program is designed to prepare students for employment as a Medical Laboratory Assistant in either a private, hospital, doctor’s clinic or public health laboratory. The program consists of a combination of theory and practical experiences. Students learn how to collect and process various clinical specimens, including blood, for testing and analysis and perform Point of Care Testing. Administrative functions to support the operation of the medical laboratory are also included in the program.

A Medical Administrative Specialist serves a key role in medical office, clinic, and hospital settings. This multi-skilled practitioner is competent in medical records management, insurance processing, coding, and billing, management of practice finances, information processing, and fundamental office management tasks.

A Patient Care Technician is a healthcare technician working under the supervision of a nurse, doctor, or other health professional to administer basic care to patients. This position involves interacting with patients face-to-face and providing assistance with daily tasks.

Medical  assistants are versatile allied health professionals. They are cross trained to perform clinical and administrative responsibilities.

The Medical Laboratory Supervisory Workshop is designed to prepare laboratory supervisors and managers to meet and maintain the accepted standards in all aspects of laboratory operation and management while competently, providing quality and reliable diagnostic services to the people of Guyana and internationally.
