 Math Curriculum for Grades 5-8

The math curriculum for grades 5-8 follow the New Jersey State Standards for instruction of math in our state. We work with fifth grade math of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals all the way through fifth grade probability and geometry. In the sixth grade, we continue this journey and add on integers and PEMDAS equations, just to mention a few more. The seventh grade continues on with the fundamentals of Algebra which leads into eighth grade and the foundations of Algebra.  There is appropriate grade level geometry for their grade each year.

Throughout the year, the students have interesting ways of discovering the different aspects of their level math with games, little projects, hidden messages, their books, as well as finding math uses in the world.  For instance, finding angles in or outside buildings and then playing geometry Simon Says for angles. Discovering real portions as parts of a whole with objects, toys, food, or candy.  Discovering how PI came about.  Hands on discovery of how to bisect angles with a compass and the uses of a protractor. Creating pictures that incorporate geometry and math.   Scientific Notation is always an interesting way to work on or speak about space distance or something small like microscopic matter.  All of these come together to make things interesting in math class.

Below are some samples of the students' work and creativity through the genres of mathematics.

About me

As a teacher, I am a firm believer that learning is a passion that lasts a lifetime. It is my goal to be an example of this enthusiasm throughout the school year so, in turn, my students can become fascinated as well and desire knowledge now and beyond their school years.
