What is Busking?
Busking refers to the practice of artistic and entertaining activities such as singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument and acting in public open space, and the performers may receive monetary donations from the audience on a voluntary basis. Street performance has been considered to be a part of a city's cultural life contributing to the vibrancy and diversity of the city.
Nowadays, ways and scales of busking can be flexible. From one-man band to band consists of 5-6 members. To be precise, busking is the purest form of performing art. It doesn’t require a stage, without the support of commercial groups, nor impetus of art community. Just the performers and the audiences. Busking is a self-employed alternative art that utilizes the instability of public places as a medium.
Each city has its own busking culture development, conceiving unique ecology of street art, at the same time having commonality across cities. Busker would choose to perform in a place with a larger flow of people passing by and to perform contents that suit the people’s taste. However, buskers do not necessarily ‘sell’ their performance, but rather to strive for opportunities to perform. Buskers vent and share feelings and culture with busking, and give us more reasons to enjoy public places.
