Religion
Students learn about the Catholic Church, the Saints, the Sacraments, and the parish community. God's love and care for them is emphasized throughout the year.
Literacy
This year we will be using the Really Great Reading phonics program. The Blast program covers explicit instruction in the foundational skills needed to help students with basic skills in reading in 1st Grade. They will learn how to master reading words with complex consonant constructions in Closed Syllables, Open Syllables, Vowel-Consonant-e Syllables, Vowel Team Syllables, and inflectional endings. Students also learn how to apply functional strategies to successfully read multisyllabic words with ease. Blast targets the skills students need to build confidence with decoding skills in order to become accurate fluent readers.
We also teach Guided Reading daily where students develop skills to help them read independently, silently, and fluently. In these groups, they learn reading strategies such as looking for context clues, understanding syntax or word structure, and using inferencing skills, to help them read texts on their guided reading level.
Writing
The students will be writing on a daily basis. I model excellent writing for the students, share the pen with students, and conference with the children as they write independently.
Math
We use the Go Math program. Lessons are designed to give students the opportunity to activate prior knowledge, collaborate and ask questions of each other, and productively struggle and persevere in problem solving.
