I am running a clinical study currently in NHS Grampian, looking to recruit people with Parkinson's, whose swallowing has been affected.
This study is part of my PhD project and is looking into how ultrasound can measure swallowing movements of the mouth in Parkinson's, and what patients think of this new technology. This may help develop a future assessment which is accessible and patient-friendly, giving more information about current swallowing function.
The study is approximately an hour in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
An ultrasound headset is fitted to hold an ultrasound probe underneath the chin. This is then worn while drinking water, and eating small amounts of custard.
Interested in taking part? Please check with a member of your NHS care team, e.g., Parkinson's Nurse, GP, Neurologist, Speech and Language Therapist, Physio or email gcartney@qmu.ac.uk
Are you an NHS staff member who works with people with Parkinson's and can support recruitment referral for this study? Please get in touch with gcartney@qmu.ac.uk for more information.
I am hugely grateful for any help in getting people involved in this study.
