For my capstone project I chose to do a selection of pieces for a recital. I decided to do a solo for each instrument I played in high school; oboe and clarinet. For clarinet I chose to focus on my future in music, primarily my college audition materials. For oboe I chose to focus on the ending of an era as I don't plan to really play oboe outside of high school.
Barret etude No. 2
I found the Barret etudes through my teacher, Dr. Ethington, when we started incorporating them in our lessons. I was very found of number 2 and it's simplicity which allowed for greater musicality. It's also very short which I think holds some symbolism to my time as an oboist. An instrument I picked up my sophomore year and I have dearly loved my time as an oboe player however it is quickly coming to a close.
Fantasiestücke Op. 73 by Schumann
This piece was also discovered with my lessons teacher Dr. Quamo. The process to find it was very long and interesting. When I discussed with my teacher that I wanted to go into music in college I was told to start listening to a list of undergrad music that I would like to play. I spent hours listening to pieces to find the right one to audition with. I finally stumbled upon this Schumann piece that immediately caught my attention. The first movement was intriguing with it's 2 over 3 feel, the piano playing a triplet figure while the clarinet played eighth notes. It sounded simple yet complex at the same time. The second movement has the catchiest piano opening which had me humming along to it all day. Finally the third movement, the finally bow type moment had my captivated with the main melody. I soon found out that while sounding simple it was quite hard to play on my instrument. The challenges to play the piece had me quite proud of what I had accomplished with it.
