Around eight years ago, my older sister, Sara, started her first year of high school, and marching band. The show that she got to perform her freshman year was titled "Simple Gifts". The show included parts of the song throughout the show. This performance is what truly got me interested in marching band and music as a whole.
I decided on this piece because the composer, Frank Ticheli, was the same person who composed the first song that I not only had a solo in, but it was also my first real challenging piece of music. That piece showed me that I needed to gain some confidence to truly become a musician.Â
Growing up, my sister was a huge inspiration for me, even though she didn't appreciate my clinginess. She was what made me want to pick up the flute and join band. In all honesty, she deserves the most credit in my asperations to continue music in my future.
I truly believe that if I was never able to see my older sister's love and admiration for the arts, I wouldn't be the person that I am today. In my experience with the performing arts, I learned that everything is subject to change and that you shouldn't take anything for granted.
