In November 2019, Heads of IB schools and IB Coordinators in Qatar met on a Tuesday to start thinking about why and how to start an IB association in Qatar. Present in the meeting was Mrs. Mary Tadros, IB Development and Recognition Manager for the Middle East, who shared her extensive experience regarding the role IB associations can play in their respective countries in supporting the vision and mission of the IBO. The goal of the meeting was to activate the “Qatar Association of IB World schools”. The Association will allow IB schools in Qatar to have a stronger voice with the IB and help leverage the IB education with local and regional partners, including universities and the Ministry of Education. Participants discussed the benefits of such an association and started thinking about its constitution and the nature of its activities. The Education Development Institute (EDI), the institute behind the initiative and the driving force of the whole process, concluded the meeting by sending a draft plan to the participants.
In January 2020, a group of Heads of IB schools met to write the Association’s constitution, mission and vision and send them for approval by all members. The schools’ representatives aimed at having an association that will provide a forum for school collaboration, exchange of good practice and networking. An association that will play an active role in negotiating university recognition for IB programs, a resource for new IB schools and a support for developing the IB mission around the world.
Following the IB schools’ approval of the constitution, vision, and mission of QIBA, the final step towards the launching of QIBA was the election of its board members. In May 2020, the schools met virtually to elect representatives for every IB programme (PYP, MYP, DP) as well as a secretary and a Head of association in addition to the permanent EDI member.
… QIBA was born.
