What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is intended to target the senses as a means to reduce and relieve stress and anxiety.

Mindfulness includes deep and focused breathing, identifying emotions and awareness of your physical feelings related to stress and your environment.

The space is available to students and staff members, and is intended for single person use.

The Space

The Mindfulness Room is housed in the Secondary School Library.

This is a safe, comforting and neutral space specifically for our students who are working through anxiety issues, or may be under significant stress.

Students who wish to enter must see a counselor first. We will work with you through mindfulness strategies and coping techniques before escorting you to the room.

Inside of the room, there are additional coping strategies for students to use on their own. These include adult coloring books, stress balls, journaling and listening to white noise.

Effectiveness

In order for the intention of the space to be as effective as possible, we must adhere to what it is.

The Mindfulness room is not:

  • Student hangout spot
  • Staff hangout spot
  • Lounging area
  • Hiding place
  • Behavioral timeout
  • Storage
  • Teaching area

No food, drinks, electronics or school work are allowed inside.
