Preparing your subject

Pymble Ladies’ College is committed to ensuring that all students can engage in their studies in a meaningful way while in the online classroom. This will require teaching/ learning materials and experiences to be developed so teachers can deliver meaningful lessons online and students can authentically access classes remotely. It is important to note that this may involve technical difficulties and limitations at times. However, use this guide to begin preparing your subject for online delivery.

Check and update subject content in Canvas

Review your course in Canvas and ensure all content is up to date and available on your subject site.

How can I do this?

  • Include an introduction to the subject, scope and sequence for the unit, topic and/ or module, copies or links to reading materials, worksheets or any other source material the students may need in your Canvas course using Pages and/ or Modules.

  • You may need to download the material contained in these links in advance. Update or replace any links or video-based content in your site that may not be accessible to students overseas or without access to WIFI. Be mindful of content that may be subject to restrictions in overseas countries.

  • We recommend zipping and exporting your Canvas course to students so they can access course content without internet access. See the Tools and Technology section.

  • Review potential activities assignments and/ or assessments are accessible and readily available when the time is appropriate. The nature and submission format of the task may need to be adjusted to suit online delivery.

Information on how to set up and manage courses in Canvas can be found in the Canvas Guide.

Organising your course work on Canvas

Ensure that the layout and organisation of the resources on Canvas is structured, organised and intuitive for the students to follow. Revise the Pages and Modules. Do you need to cull or restructure information in advance of opening and welcoming the students to your online classroom space. This will prevent any confusion around finding or locating files when learning.

Assessment communication and information

When delivering content online, circumstances may require us to make adjustments to the date, design and/ or the submission format of assessment. Work directly with your HoLA to discuss any questions or concerns regarding assessment in your course.

Assessment norms and procedures:

  • Communication regarding whole cohort assessment will be via Announcements and the relevant Year Group/ Course in Canvas. HoLA/ Stage Coordinator will take responsibility for the delivery of this information.

  • Please ensure assessment details and submission deadlines are set up correctly, communicated clearly on Canvas and the task is published. This is the official notification of the assessment task.

  • For subjects that have a practical assessment, work with your HoLA who will determine the format, changes, and potential rescheduling of assessment etc

  • In the event that an assessment needs to be rescheduled, please check the weekly view of the Edumate Calendar to avoid clashes in assessment for the cohort.

  • Marking processes for cohort based assessment will be dependent on the task and determined by the HoLA.

  • HoLAs should consult with the Director of Studies to determine any changes in assessment dates and / or procedure.

  • Students are being asked to email re Absences, Extensions or Illness/Misadventure the HOLA for each subject area and CC in their teacher. HOLAs may then forward onto the appropriate Stage Coordinator.
