Welcome to Room 9 with Mrs. Avey!

Hi students and families! Let me tell you a little bit about myself... I've worked at Rio del Mar for 16 years. I started teaching 4th grade way back in 2006, right here in Room 9! I taught for 8 years, then took 2 years out of the classroom to be a Mentor for the Cotsen Art of Teaching Foundation, still at Rio. Then, I went back to the classroom and taught a 4th/5th combination class for one year. After that, I became the Assistant Principal at Rio for 5 years. I loved that job and enjoyed getting to know all of the Seahawks in every grade and all of the Rio families, but I missed having my own classroom, so I decided to go back to teaching!

I have one daughter, Eden - she's in 4th grade at Rio too! My husband, Mr. Avey, also works at Rio, and this year he's teaching a 3rd/4th combination class. We have two pets - a dog named Maggie, she's a year-and-a-half and is a Miniature Australian Shephard, and a cat named Pearl. Pearl will be 13 this year! When we're not working, we love to camp, go to the beach, read, go to concerts, cheer on the Giants, and enjoy this beautiful town and community we are so fortunate to be a part of!
