Why Does Teaching for Global Competence Matter?
We teach because we care about our students and their futures. We strive to give them the knowledge and skills needed to open doors of opportunity, to be successful in whichever path they choose, so that when they are grown they can do meaningful work, and live full and joyful lives. According to Harvard University and the International Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCED), these are the realities that we are living in: "International markets, unprecedented migration, growing economic inequalities, increasing ethnic and religious tension and violence and massive environmental changes. These realities require the transformation of education. so that students are employable in the global economy. They will need an understanding of international trade, and experience tackling global problems such as disasters, disease and climate related issues and solutions” (OECD). What we do in the classroom, teaching students to articulate their thoughts, to listen, to engage with information, and take action against inequities will have a direct impact on the world, both now and in the years to come; increasing empathy and humanitarian action, and reducing xenophobia, bias, and intolerance. Experimenting with Global Education pedagogy has transformed my teaching and has inspired and engaged my students. It has renewed my sense of purpose and joy after 29 years of teaching. I hope that this guide informs, encourages, and inspires you to experiment with Global Education in your own classroom.
