Dear Parents and Guardians,

CAASPP Testing will take place from May 13th through the 24th in the hours before morning recess.  Please make sure your child has a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast in the morning.  Testing mornings can be long, and these things really help your child feel their best.  The rest of the school day will be filled with the usual subjects and activities.

Open House is scheduled for the evening of May 29th!  We look forward to seeing you then!

This week the fifth graders will begin to learn about our play.  We will practice the play in class, and plan on performing for parents during the week of June 10th, the last week of the school year.  This year, our play is called, “Summer Camp – a Musical Caper.”  We can’t wait to learn all the parts and perform it for you!

The 5th Grade Battle of the Books is over!  The final two books were Out of My Mind and The Lightning Thief.  The winner (by just three votes) was Out of My Mind!  We encourage all the 5th graders to think about all the books in this competition when preparing their summer reading.  Many of these books are part of a series and all are good reading.  Enjoy!

For the week of May 13th here’s what you can expect:

Language Arts:  This week we will continue Unit 7 of Benchmark.  We will work on reading skills such as main idea, key details, and utilizing primary sources while reading more about the American Revolution, and other conflicts.

Math:  This week the students are learning about Classification of quadrilaterals in Module 5 of our math text.  They are learning about the properties of various figures, as well as practicing measuring angles and drawing parallel lines.

Geography:  This week the students will dig into information about the state they are researching and for which they will create a State Museum. This project will be on display at our Open House on May 29th.  In order to help the students organize their work, the teachers have come up with mini deadlines for each part of this project.  Most of this report will be done at school, but students are also welcome to bring it home to continue their research and work.  The 3-d object that represents their state will have to be created at home.  Please ask your 5th grader to show you the information they have gathered so far.  The mini-due dates are attached.  The final report will be due on May 28th.

We will also continue our 50 States and Capitals unit this week.  The 5th graders will learn about the states of the Midwestern region this week.  The quiz for this region will take place on Friday, May 17th.

Sincerely,
