The origins of the internet
Levi S.
The internet is widely used nowadays, and for us gen alpha's and gen z's, we mostly take it for granted. however, back in the 60's, people near and far were fighting tooth and nail to try and make an internet-esque network. in the 60's, computers were a thing, mainly used for scientific models and such. however, in the 60's because of a lack of a network, every single computer had to do every job, instead of receiving data and working on that. when bob taylor took over ARPA's computer division, he realized this and made making a network to connect all computers ARPA's main concern and goal. finally in 1969, something very revolutionary happened. for a long time, computers could never receive information from a router. however, on that day it had finally happened, and arpanet was born.
QUAKE GAME REVIEW
Quake is a Shooter game developed by ID software and released by Bethesda. One main thing that must be credited to it is it is the very first fully 3d rendered shooter. People mainly only remember doom 1993 and doom 2 , which is kind of dumb because doom did not really achieve anything (except for being the first game to receive an M rating from the ESRB!🙄). And guess what? Quake was in the making while doom 2 was released. Quake is a vey good game, and deserves a lot more attention than it currently gets, or did get.
My honest review: 9/10

Physical media is dead and streaming services are the new king on the block. From CDs to Blu-rays, it's all being fazed out. An example of this is best buy stating that they plan to slowly remove all physical media from their stores. This is extremely detrimental because this is the start of never being able to truly own anything. Spotify can always shut down, so can Steam or Hulu. Regardless, Physical media is dead, that's just the fact of the matter. It has been for years even if we didn't realize it, a mear husk of itself still hanging around while you wonder why. Even if there are fads of collectinghit doesn't stay that way. An example of this is that recently vinyl sales have been going up. People will eventually lose interest. While this may be seen as a pessimistic way to see things, all it is is the natural progression of technology. you should ask yourself, do you still consistently use a pager? My bet is that you said no. this really is the same situation other than the fact that streaming services rise has caused and will cause drastic changes to every industry that its introduced to. While I would like to tell you to boycott or something of the like, that is unrealistic and would never change anything. My only advice to you is to grab a CD, Blu-ray, or a vinyl record while they're still around.
Online vs. In-Person Shopping
By James E.
Online and in-person shopping are both very different but very common ways to purchase groceries and other products. However, one of them is slowly killing the other.
Many stores have begun losing money and closing locations due to online shopping platforms like Amazon. The stores lose money because platforms like Amazon take away customers from these stores. Many people would rather be able to order something in the comfort of their home and have it delivered to them over leaving their home and going to a store, which might be far away.
Another group of businesses that lose money due to online shopping is restaurants. Specifically, restaurants that don't support any food delivery service. It is not easy for a restaurant to set up support for a delivery service, and many simply just don't want to. Food delivery also causes servers to possibly lose their job, because less customers eating at the restaurant is less work for the waiter.
The next group of businesses that are negatively affected by large shopping platforms are small/local businesses. These businesses might not be able to access cheap manufacturing, like other large companies, which causes the products to be expensive. The products being expensive causes people to be deterred from the business, and people might prefer to order the same or similar product online. Another reason these small businesses are negatively affected is because there is an extremely low chance you will find them on online shopping platforms, and even if they are on them, it is likely that larger companies with cheaper products will be pushed ahead of the small businesses.
The effects of online shopping don't only reach these businesses, it also affects everyone.
Even if online shopping is cheaper, the costs of delivery result in lots of extra money spent that didn't need to be spent. The cost of a delivery even just from the UK to the US can be very expensive.
Even the people who work in these online shopping businesses are affected. For example, the working conditions for people working in Amazon packaging facilities are usually less than good, and they get paid less than a living wage. People who drive for food delivery platforms get paid a low minimum wage at best and have to hope they get a few good tips every day or so. They also have to fill their car they use for not only deliveries, but also everyday commutes. They could use a cheap vehicle, like a bicycle or something similar, but it would be a lot harder to transport larger or heavier deliveries. They could also use an electric vehicle to avoid gas prices, but EVs are way out of most delivery driver's budgets.
Even though there are many negatives, online shopping can still be a good thing.
The first positive about it is that you don't have to leave your home. Maybe your car is not working and it's four miles to the nearest grocery store, maybe you aren't feeling good and don't want to leave your home, in this case you would order whatever you need online.
The next positive for online shopping is that you can find everything on a platform like Amazon, meanwhile in a store you may not be able to find everything you're looking for, whether it be because it's out of stock or you just can't find it. This is also a reason why online shopping is killing in-person shopping, but it is a positive for online shopping.
The last positive (I can think of) about online shopping is that on some shopping platforms, you can purchase old products that may not be for sale anymore. For example, purchasing a discontinued product on an online shopping platform like eBay, where anybody can sell anything.
In conclusion, online shopping causes many problems for smaller businesses that can't access cheap manufacturing and shipping. Online shopping has also made leaving your home to buy things like groceries less popular, but online shopping also has its positives. I doubt in-person shopping is going anywhere though, it has existed for thousands of years, and online shopping has only existed for a little over 40 years.
