Summer Reading @ Elementary
Incoming Kindergarteners & Rising 1st-5th Graders
What is encouraged?
Enjoy a summer filled with family/friends, sunshine, and reading! We encourage all K-5 students to consider how often and how much they are reading in June, July, and August. Please follow these recommendations:
Incoming Kindergarteners: Read (or be read to) 3 times a week for at least 10 minutes per session.
Rising 1st Graders: Read (or be read to) 3 times a week for at least 10 minutes per session.
Rising 2nd Graders: Read 3 times a week for at least 10 minutes per session.
Rising 3rd Graders: Read 3 times a week for at least 15 minutes per session.
Rising 4th Graders: Read 4 times a week for at least 15 minutes per session.
Rising 5th Graders: Read 4 times a week for at least 20 minutes per session.
Print this log to track your reading if your school did not provide an alternate way to log reading time.
What books should you read?
The choice is yours! You should choose books that are interesting to you personally. Please consider your preferences for authors, genres, and series when selecting titles. Does the book fit your personal reading purpose (to laugh, to learn, to explore)? Does the book interest you?
You should also choose books that are at a comfortable reading level. Too many unknown words may lead to frustration. Open up to any random page. If there are five or more words you don’t know, then the book is probably not a good fit, at this time. However, you are interested in a difficult book, please consider reading the book aloud or doing a partner read--no matter how old you are! (A parent reading with their child should encourage the child to ask questions, make predictions, and relate the story to his/her own life.)

If you would like additional guidance, Common Sense Media is an independent nonprofit organization that provides unbiased information and rates movies, TV shows, books, and more so that caregivers can feel comfortable about the choices they make for their children. This website may be able to provide additional information about a book selection.
How can you access books online?
PVSD is dedicated to helping you access high-quality, high-interest books. Please know that our school libraries, specifically Schwenksville Elementary and Middle School East, will be open this summer for summer library programming, One World, Many Stories!

Additionally, current PVSD students may access library ebooks and audiobooks through our Destiny Discover library catalog. See the links below. We also encourage you to utilize ebooks offered by local MCLINC libraries and the Free Library of Philadelphia.
What will happen when you go back to school?
We really want you to focus on reading and get excited about starting a new school year! During the first few weeks of the school year, you may have the opportunity to DISCUSS OR WRITE (or maybe both) about your reading. Each elementary school may offer additional opportunities related to summer reading that are unique to each building. PVSD's shared goal is to create a community of readers!
