Music Theory

2.5 Credits

Grades 10-12

This course offers a thorough presentation of the fundamentals of music through studies of scales, key signatures, chords, inversions, melodic and harmonic form and progression. Also, ear training, rhythmic dictation, and reading and writing music on a preliminary level are experienced through the use of a music computer lab. Students will listen perceptively to music, distinguishing such elements as pitch, melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, structure, and dynamics as these relate to the expressive whole and be able to discuss the techniques and media used to convey expressive ideas in a musical work.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of at least 2.5 credits in music, not including Rock of Ages
