1st Trimester
Genre: Mystery
This fall, our fourth graders will dive into the exciting world of mystery! We'll explore the key elements that make a mystery story engaging—such as clues, suspects, red herrings, and clever detectives. Students will read mystery books and analyze how authors build suspense and solve puzzles. To showcase their understanding, each student will complete a creative book project in the form of a "Case File", where they’ll document the mystery, track clues, and present their conclusions—just like real investigators!
2nd Trimester
Genre: Historical Fiction
Students will explore the elements of Historical Fiction, including realistic characters, historical settings, and events based on real time periods. Through reading and discussion, they’ll learn how authors blend fact with fiction to tell engaging stories. Each student will complete a Creative Timeline Project, highlighting the main events from their chosen book to show how the story unfolds within its historical context.
3rd Trimester
Genre: Fantasy/Science Fiction
Students will explore the key elements of Fantasy (magic, mythical creatures, imaginary worlds) and Science Fiction (technology, space, futuristic settings). Through reading and discussion, they’ll learn how authors build these unique genres. Each student will complete a Character Development Project, creating a detailed profile of a character from their chosen book to show understanding of traits, growth, and genre-specific features.
