Parents are ALWAYS welcome to come observe at any tournament!!
Tournaments are generally 2 days long with the following rough schedule:
Friday Morning - Congress
Friday Afternoon - Debate (PF/BQ/LD): 4 initial rounds
Saturday Morning - Speech Events: 3 initial rounds followed by a break
Saturday Afternoon - Debate final rounds and Speech Events out-rounds and finals rounds
Saturday Evening - Awards
Students will only have to attend the days necessary for their event.
Most tournaments start around 8 AM each day and go until 8 or 9 PM. Although there is a set schedule posted ahead of time for each tournament, it is more of a general guideline since rounds often go late.
We usually leave the school from 6:30-7:00 AM, and return to school between 9-10:30 PM. Students will contact their rides with exact pick up times as we leave the tournament. We also have a group Remind for parents to receive a blast when we are returning from tournaments/reminders. To join the Remind, text 81010 the letters "@pvsnd", and this will sign you up to receive the texts, no account/download required.
All students are expected to travel to and from the tournaments with the team - no pickups by parents at the tournament unless specially requested ahead of time (email zkelso@pvlearners.net for the paperwork ahead of the tournament), or if the competer's judge are already at the tournament for judging.
All students competing each day are expected to stay for the entire tournament and support their teammates, even if they do not make it to out rounds or finals. This includes the awards ceremony. It is good sportsmanship!
Students usually hang out in the school cafeterias between rounds, and may bring books or schoolwork to do in case they do not make final rounds.
Food is available for purchase at the tournaments. We often have a parent snack sign up sheet for donations so the team has water and snacks for free. They are expected to buy their lunch/ dinner at the tournament.
Students are expected to dress professionally for tournaments. This usually means suits for most students (which can be gotten pretty cheaply at Goodwill) but is not limited to suits. They should dress nicely as if they are going to an interview for a job, including minimum jewelry and a neat hair style. Although their attire is technically not a factor for judging criteria, we know that people are influenced by appearance and we want to create a skilled, polished, and competent impression. Dressing well also creates a more professional atmosphere for students. Please talk to the coach if there are questions or concerns about this issue.
