This past weekend, The Shemer Art Center hosted its opening reception for the annual New Horizons High School Student Art Exhibition. This yearly event highlights the artistic talents of two upperclassmen from over 40 Arizona high schools in a range of two- and three-dimensional media. Senior Ella Aretakis' acrylic painting Shattered Reflections was honored with the Linton-Barnhill Award.

Students in Advanced Art recently attended the opening reception of their gallery exhibition Personal Effects at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Throughout the month of April, these students worked with local artist Therosia Reynolds to create symbolic self-portraits using found materials. These mixed-media artworks allowed students to explore the theme of identity to create pieces that expressed their authentic personalities. The exhibition is open to the public and runs through July 31st.

4 AP Studio Art students represented Pinnacle High School at the Young Artists Showcase at Yavapai Community College. This juried exhibition included student artists from Prescott and surrounding areas. Erica Garay (12) was awarded Best in Show for her digital illustration titled A Discovery.
Congratulations to students from Pinnacle Visual Arts classes who had the opportunity to showcase their work at this years annual Sights and Sounds of Paradise Valley district art show! This was our first public district event since the beginning of the Pandemic, and it was so wonderful to be able to showcase student work to the public again. \
Receiving school level awards were Brianna Loo (10) for her portrait oil painting, Emma Hallows (11) for her painted sculpture, and Jacqueline Okeke (12) for her oil pastel illustration.
Alyssa Hannum (12) was awarded the District Purchase Award and Jada Schlossmacher (10) was awarded the Fine Arts Director's Award.
This show features artwork from all PVUSD schools as well as musical performances by band, choir, and orchestra.

Every year, Valley Metro rolls out their Design a Transit Wrap contest. Students from across the valley interpret the benefits of public transit into colorful and bold designs. The winning design is printed as a wrap on one of the city's buses for the year. For the 2021 contest, 9th grade student Pranathi Arun Senthil and 10th grade student Bella Wang both submitted beautiful designs to this contest. Out of 48 entries from across Maricopa county, Pranathi's design was chosen as the 3rd place winner. Congratulations!! You can read more about the contest here.
Every March marks the beginning of Youth Arts Month, dedicated to celebrating the creativity of students in the arts across the nation. The Arizona Department of Education honors Arizona students by hosting a Showcase each year, recognizing the top talent from around the state. Each school has the opportunity to submit up to two works of art per grade band. 9th grade Drawing student Pranathi Arun Senthil was selected to represent Pinnacle High School in this year's showcase. Congratulations to Senior student Rylee McAvoy, whose watercolor and ink illustration, titled IX. The Hermit was selected for the New Horizons High School Student Art Exhibition. McAvoy's work has received the Thomas R. Wood and Lima Awards.
The Arizona Department of Education selected Pinnacle High School to represent Arizona and design 12 ornaments for the 2020 National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse display in Washington, D.C. Ornaments from 56 States and US Territories will adorn trees surrounding the National Christmas Tree representing each state and territory as part of the America Celebrates ornament display. This year, several ornaments from each school will also be displayed inside the White House, including three ornaments created by Pinnacle students.
The 12 students selected to create ornaments are Ella Aretakis, 10th grade; Lila Carlson, 12th grade; Leticia de Aveiro Ramos, 12th grade; Taylor Doughty, 12th grade; Erica Garay, 11th grade; Jesse Green, 12th grade; Chloe Hill, 11th grade; Rylee McAvoy, 12th grade; Jacqueline Okeke, 11th grade; Lauren Ribadeneira, 12th grade; Taylor Schultz, 11th grade; and Kayla Tanita, 12th grade. Ornaments designed by de Aveiro Ramos, Doughty , and Green were displayed inside the White House.

Congratulations to sophomore student, Erica Garay, for receiving a Gold Key for her digital comic art submission in the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards competition. A Gold Key is the highest honor available for the region-at-large, and her piece will now go on to the national level where it will be critiqued against other comic art submissions from across the country.

Freshman, sophomore, and junior students represented Pinnacle this month at Scottsdale Community College's Inaugural High School Art Show with a variety of works in drawing, painting, and ceramics. Taylor Doughty received an Honorable Mention for her colorful, acrylic self-portrait. Lauren Ribadeneira received 3rd place for her skillfully rendered, graphite portrait. Kayla Tanita received 2nd place for her incredibly detailed scratchboard highland cow. All submitted works are a representation of the high quality artwork produced by students in our visual arts programs. Congratulations to all students whose work was selected. The show is on display in the lobby of Scottsdale Community College's Visual Arts building until then end of June and is open to the public.
Senior students Kate Hilgendorf and Molly Smith were selected to represent Pinnacle High School and PVUSD at Phoenix Art Museum's event celebration National Youth Arts Month. Their work was displayed for an evening amongst work by students from all grades across the state.
AP Studio and Advanced Art students showcased a variety of works this weekend at our district's annual Sites and Sounds of PV Schools fine arts show. Congratulations to Kate Hilgendorf for winning the Fine Arts Director's award for her amazing mixed media painting. Congrats to senior AP student Hannah Schlossmacher for showing her watercolor piece "Discovering Music" at the Shemer Art Center. This exhibition features exceptional artwork by artists across the state. Each high school can submit up to 2 works for the show, and Hannah's watercolor and pen plein air illustration was Ms. Greenland's choice for Pinnacle High School's 2-D submission. Congrats Hannah!
Congrats to two Pinnacle students for placing 1st and 2nd place in the Dutch Bros. Halloween Sticker contest! For the first time in Dutch Bros. history, they have opened up their monthly sticker design to creators outside of their company. Exclusive to PVUSD, this competition saw hundreds of entries from all grade levels. Junior Chloe Ball won the competition, and her zombie hand sticker design will be reproduced and available at all Arizona Dutch Bros. locations on October 31st. She also won other amazing prizes, such as master art classes, gift cards, and free DutchBros. for a year. Senior Kate Hilgendorf received 2nd place with her "Better World" pumpkin planet and has also received awesome numerous prizes.
Congrats to senior AP Studio Art student Gianna Monfeli, whose work was selected to be displayed at the Spectrum juried exhibition of student artwork across Phoenix. The opening reception hosted hundreds of visitors from across the valley, who came to celebrate the creativity of young artists and their contemporary views of a range of subject matter. Gianna's piece, an acrylic self-portrait on canvas panel, shows vibrant use of color, expressive paint application, and a skillful rendering of the human face. Her work is a testament to her practice and pridefully represents Pinnacle High School's visual arts program.

Each high school had the opportunity to submit two of their best student works. This year, students also had the opportunity to enter a design to become the official seal for the state's newly adopted State Seal of Fine Arts Proficiency. Each school submitted up to 4 designs. All artwork was displayed at an opening reception on March 20th and remained viewable on each floor of the Department of Education for the following month.
