Phoenix's Special Election

By: Micah Downey

Non-majority decisions in mayoral race lead to prolonged election season

In the general election last November, no candidate earned the required fifty-percent plus one number of votes to secure the win for Mayor of Phoenix. As a result, Phoenix faces a run-off election for the top two vote-getters, both democrats. The special election features former district 8 council member Kate Gallego, who earned the most votes in November with a 19-point lead over the other three candidates, and former district 5 council member Daniel Valenzuela, who came in second in the November election. Consequently, the voters determine the election this week, March 12, 2019. Voters also determine new council members for districts 5 and 8 in this Tuesday's special election.

Michael Cohen’s New Testimony

By: Jenna Midgett

President Trump’s ex-attorney's new testimony

Donald Trump's former attorney, Michael Cohen, appeared before congress last Wednesday to submit testimony against his previous client. Among other things, Cohen said this of Trump, “He is a racist. He is a con man. And he is a cheat,” Republicans discredited Cohen’s testimony saying he lied to congress before. In 2017, Cohen appeared before Congress after the special counsel looking into connections between the Russian government and the Trump campaign turned up evidence of possible involvement from Cohen. Cohen lied to Congress about the evidence they found, specifically about a plan to build a Trump sponsored building in Moscow. Continued investigations into Michael Cohen’s ended with the ex-lawyer being convicted of lying to Congress, tax fraud, and breaking campaign finance laws.

During his public testimony on February 27, 2019 Cohen claimed that Trump knew in advance that WikiLeaks planned to publish emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee, and that Trump knew and advised Cohen to pay off adult-film actress Stormy Daniels. Republican representative Jim Jordan of Ohio called Mr. Cohen a “fraudster, cheat, convicted felon and, in two months, a federal inmate.” Trump responded to the Cohen testimony from Vietnam after meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying “He lied a lot, but it was very interesting, because he didn’t lie about one thing. He said no collusion with the Russian hoax. And I said, ‘I wonder why he didn’t lie about that too like he did about everything else.’”

Cohen testified three times in the week of February 25th, twice privately on Tuesday and Thursday, and once publicly on Wednesday. CNN also reported Cohen is scheduled to return to Congress “on March 6... the date he was originally supposed to report to prison to begin serving a three-year sentence. A judge allowed his report date to be delayed two months, in part due to a request from Cohen's attorney to give him time to prepare for his congressional testimony.”

The road so far

One month into 2019 giving readers a recap

By: Micah Downy

POLITICS

The new year kicked off with a boom with January proving 2019 already an eventful year. President Trump called for a government shutdown in an attempt to get funding for a US-Mexican border wall, unsuccessfully when he reopened the government in late January with none of his demands met. The 35 day US Government shutdown, from December 22 of 2018 through January 25 of 2019, caused nation-wide concern for over 800,000 government employees. Ending 2018 in the government shutdown took a toll on US citizens and their faith in how the Trump Administration runs the country.

If the debate on funding for the border wall remains stagnant, President Trump threatened to declare a national security threat to get the money needed for the border wall if he and congress fail to find a compromise.. Through all of this the US economy projected to lose at 11 billion during the shutdown. They set a deadline for the new deal for Friday, February 15th. However, Congress and Trump met an agreement on Tuesday, February 12th, according to the BBC “aides familiar with the negotiations say it includes $1.375bn in funding for 55 miles of new fencing at the border, a small part of the more than 2,000 miles promised by the president.” The deal needs approval by Congress and the President.

SPORTS

On February 3rd, 2019 the NFL Super Bowl played out in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The infamous New England Patriots, trying for their 6th Super Bowl win, played the Los Angeles Rams and won 13 to 3. That score breaks the record for the lowest scoring super bowl in history. The halftime show either came out a success or huge failure depending on who reports it. The death of Spongebob creator in November, 2018 caused a rush of fans pleading with the Super Bowl to play Sweet Victory - featured in the episode “Band Geeks”, during the halftime show. Fans created a petition which reached over 1 million signatures. Although the song made it into the performance, fans claimed disappointment at the fact it introduced “Sicko Mode” by Travis Scott.

ENTERTAINMENT

In other news, award show season commenced on January 6th with the Golden Globe Awards, followed shortly by the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Screen Actors’ Guild. On Sunday February 10th, 2019 both the 61st annual Grammys and the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) took place. A notable event from both comes from Lady Gaga and Bradly Cooper stars of the oscar nominated movie A Star is Born. People became confused when only Lady Gaga attended the Grammy's to accept the award for Shallow, however, Bradley Cooper was at the BAFTA's accepting the award for Best Film Music. This leads to the Academy Awards set for February 24th. Happy 2019!
