Growth Mindset
Growth Mindset
A belief system that suggests that one's intelligence and/or talents can be grown or developed with persistence, effort and a focus on learning.
A Fixed Mindset is a belief system that suggests that a person has a predetermined amount of intelligence, skills or talents.
By 3rd grade 42% of a students beliefs fall into the fixed mindset!
In order to shift back into a Growth Mindset there are 4 major components:
1. equitable access to advanced learning opportunities
2. deliberate cultivation of psychosocial skills such as perseverance, resiliency, and grit
3. student understanding of neural networks in the brain
4. growth mindset feedback and praise
A few things that I do in the class to help with a Growth Mindset are: differentiation, pre-assessment, curriculum compacting, flexible grouping, and classroom management. I also include acceleration and enrichment, formative assessment and summative assessment.
Throughout the year I will be working to help students see a Growth Mindset and recognize and change their Fixed Mindsets through feedback and class activities.
This will be a journey for all of us.
