In the fall of 2012, DAAPS (Digital Academy of Advanced Placement Scholars) launched at Shadow Mountain High School. From it's inception, the primary focus was to provide a place for students to learn and grow in their academics with a focus on the Humanities, all the while allowing them to pursue their passions for other core subjects, artistic endeavors, athletic pursuits, and everything else that the tight-knit SMHS culture has to offer. It has taken many years for the final year of this class to fully take shape. In the Spring of 2019, we had a wonderful Celebration of passion projects from 5 students. The 12th grade class grew to 13 students in 2020, 14 students in 2021, and 20 students in 2022 (2 graduated in December '21). We are so pleased with the growth in the program and the trajectory of our students.
The DAAPS Class of 2022 has amassed OVER 2 MILLION DOLLARS in scholarship money. They have persevered through some challenging times during their four year stint of high school. While they are all wonderfully gifted students, they are more amazing human beings. As a school and a program, we are so excited for what the future holds for them.
Shadow Mountain High School and the DAAPS program are so pleased and proud of this amazing group of young people. We applaud them for their persistence, diligence, and Mighty Matador-ness. They have shown their true character in the face of adversity!

DAAPS (Digital Academy of Advanced Placement Scholars) is a signature program offered at Shadow Mountain High School in the Paradise Valley Unified School District. The DAAPS program is a Humanities block geared toward the gifted student. DAAPS college survey courses incorporate AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition, AP United States History, AP European History, AP United States Government and Politics, and AP Macroeconomics. Student work is presented digitally with textbook and supplemental readings in the form of documents and essays. Emphasis is placed on political history, foreign affairs, and economic and social development, including literary and cultural history.
The Primary objective of our program is to engage our students through appropriately challenging and meaningful content. We believe that rigor (see definition and link below) comes about, not with more work, but with thoughtful work. We desire to cultivate critical readers and thinkers who have mastered the art of argumentative and analytical writing.
DAAPS courses are designed to exceed the district and state curriculum requirements and challenge the gifted or honors student. Students read, interpret, analyze and evaluate literature. In writing, students master the essay structure in narrative, expository, persuasive, research, and technical writing. Interdisciplinary courses are part of the curriculum and students focus on four areas: the critical evaluation of texts, English syntax and grammar, college level research and interdisciplinary writing. Also included in the courses are required assignments in speaking/listening and viewing/presenting.
Students enrolled in DAAPS classes are encouraged to take the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Exams. Exam scores, and each college/university, will determine eligibility for college credit.
In this program students commit to a block of time and experience a team teaching environment. While enrolled in this program, students are still able to participate in the full range of courses and activities that Shadow Mountain has to offer.
