Pupil personnel services

Pupil Personnel Services are those legally required services that enable students to benefit from instructional programs such as nursing, guidance, psychology, social work and special education. The Pupil Personnel Services staff serves all children in the district, including general education students, students with disabilities, students at risk and students who are gifted. (Yes, students may be gifted and have disabilities, i.e., physical and learning.) An alphabetical listing with a brief description of these services are listed below:

  • Contracted services - The Putnam Valley Central School District contracts with various support services (i.e. tutoring, behavior intervention) in order to provide support to students so that they may achieve academic success in the classroom.

  • Coordinate with outside agencies - Our office acts as a liaison for families in order to facilitate services for families within the community in an effort to strengthen the home/school connection.

  • Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) - Programs and services for preschool students ages 3-5 with special needs.

  • Committee on Special Education (CSE) - Programs and services for school-aged students with special needs.

  • English as a Second Language (ESL) - The ESL program focuses on excellence in meeting state standards and elevating language skills.

  • Grant writing - Refers to a proposal or an application to a potential funder to receive funding for a specific program or project.

  • Health Services - Services that improve the general physical and mental well-being of a student.

  • Occupational Therapy - Occupational therapy is a skilled health, rehabilitation and educational service that helps people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations).

  • Out-of-district placements - Educational placement for students who are in need of intensive, therapeutic or medically based services.

  • Psychology - Our team of psychologists at Putnam Valley Schools strive to help students succeed socially, emotionally and academically.

  • Physical Therapy - PT is a branch of rehabilitative health that uses specifically designed exercises and equipment to help students improve their physical abilities in the educational setting.

  • Registration - Refers to the process of enrolling students in our school district and establishing residency and age documentation.

  • Residency - In order to attend Putnam Valley Schools, you must be a resident of the Putnam Valley Central School District. Our office investigates residency fraud; as well as, assists all students in transition.

  • Response to Intervention/Instructional Support Team - RTI/IST is a method of academic intervention used in the United States to provide early, systematic assistance to children who are having difficulty learning

  • Section 504 - The Section 504 regulations require a school district to provide a "free appropriate public education" (FAPE) to each qualified student with a disability who is in the school district's jurisdiction, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability. Under section 504, FAPE consists of the provision of regular or special education and related aids and services designed to meet the student's individual educational needs as adequately as the needs of non-disabled students are met.

  • Social Work - Our team of social workers strive to strengthen the social and emotional well being of all students in order to enhance academic and personal potential.

  • Special Education - Refers to the education for students with disabilities.

  • Speech Therapy - Speech therapy services in Putnam Valley Schools assists students that have speech and communication delays.

  • Vocational Services - Are offered to students with mental or physical disabilities. These services are designed to enable students to attain skills, resources, attitudes, and expectations as they transition out of High School.

  • Title IX, VI, VII -

    • Title IX of the Educations Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in schools receiving federal funds, whether it is in academics or athletics.

    • Title VI states that each Federal agency is required to ensure that no person is excluded from participation in, denied the benefit of, or subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or religion.

    • Title VII is a provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibits discrimination in virtually every employment circumstance on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, pregnancy, or national origin. In general, Title VII applies to employers with 15 or more employees.
