Mr. Nyhart's 11th Grade American History

The purpose of this course is to trace the ideas that contributed to the founding of the American Republic and analyze the influence of various ideologies and worldviews on American society, politics, law, and culture from the colonial period through the present. Special focus throughout the course will be placed on conceptions of democracy, the role of the courts, the American presidency, and American foreign policy. Students will pay particular attention to the role of faith – or the absence of faith – in the nation’s history as evidenced in various movements and thinkers. Students will learn to analyze historical events and observe them not as isolated incidents, but as a series of interrelated causes and effects. This course will make significant use of primary sources, training students to always seek out the original context of a particular historical development or idea.
