Pancake and Eggs

My boyfriend and I were on our way to our favorite place to eat, Coopers, it was about 15 miles away from my house. He pulled up the driveway and we were off. We made it there safely although he had some issues with a driver on the road. We sat, ate, and had a great time. I ordered chocolate pancakes as always, and Oliver ordered a Italian omelette that came with toast and hash browns. Even though it was just the two of us he knew how to make a simple outing seem extravagant.Despite ordering my own meal he would alway give me half of his food. I didn’t know why, I assumed it was because he just liked to see me eat. Nevertheless it was endearing. But that day I had decided to confront him about it.

“Why do you always give me your food? I ordered pancakes for a reason you know” I said.

“Why do you always question me, woman? Just accept my love and affection.”

“But st--”

“You eat it all don’t you Scar?”

I didn’t say anything after that.

“Exactly” he said, looking up at me through his lashes as he continued to split his egg.

We paid for the meal and were back on the road when I noticed a bright red Chevrolet following us. It was the same truck that gave Olly trouble on the way up. This time it was deliberately making itself known because it kept trying to pass us, even though there wasn’t a passing lane. Oliver was getting fed up, but the man continued to honk his horn obnoxiously. Some people just don’t know when to quit. He sped up into the lane of oncoming traffic and slammed his car into our. What the man thought would be a small nudge ended up knocking us off the road. The car rolled multiple times, dirt and shards of glass clouded my vision and I blacked out.

The next thing I remember were voices surrounding me. Some I could recognize and some I didn’t.

But I could hear my parents' concern in their voice. I didn’t have any idea of what was going on, and I couldn’t move.

“How long will she be like this?” my dad asked. I could hear the worry in his voice.

“We aren't sure yet, but when she wakes up, which I’m sure she will, we will do some brain scans.” said an authoritative voice. “Young man you should be grateful you came out with only minor abrasions”

“Yea, . . . right” a deep and solemn voice said. I couldn’t recognize this voice.

After that I fell back into what felt like a deep slumber for I don’t know how long. When I woke up they told me it was three days after that conversation. I looked around the room and saw my mom, dad, and a young man.

“Oh my gosh she’s awake, Jared she’s awake!” my mom said ecstatically ushering my dad over.

“How do you feel Scarlet” my dad asked in a soft voice.

“I feel fine, minus a headache.”

They seemed glad and embraced me. They told me I was in an accident with Oliver and went into a coma for three days. After they said Oliver I drew a blank.

A younger guy I believed to be around my age hesitantly walked up to my bedside.

“Hey Scar, I’m so sorry, I'm going to make sure that guy pays for what he did, he didn’t even stay after what happened once we get out of he--” he was rambling.

“Who are you?”

The doctor came in with the result from my scans and said that there was brain damage and that I might suffer from memory loss. Which I was clearly because I didn’t know who this hazel eyed and bushy brown hair guy was. This information seemed to make him miserable. I was released from the hospital two days later and he insisted that I spend time with him, and parents agreed, which was a surprise to me. He took me to Coopers, claiming to try to jog my memory. We sat down and I ordered chocolate pancakes because I had a feeling I would like them. He smiled at me for a reason I couldn’t figure out.

“What’s so funny?” I asked skeptically.

“Nothing,” he said with a grin.

The food arrived and Oliver immediately began cutting his omelette in half. I was about to ask what he was doing when I started to remember. Memories came flooding back and I remembered everything. With the biggest smile I looked up and exclaimed, “Olly!” Let’s just say that he was a little startled.
