Welcome to 6th Grade Math!

*Overview*

Greetings everyone! Welcome to Mrs. Alexander's teacher page! Here you can find important links as well as classroom rules, procedures, expectations and suggested supplies. Take a look around! :)

*About Mrs. Alexander*

Rules/Procedures

Be Kind, Courteous, Respectful, and Responsible!

Beginning of Class: Take your seat quickly and quietly. Take out your math supplies. Have last night's homework out if there was any. Read agenda posted on the Smartboard. Sharpen pencil if needed. Work on warm-up. If you were absent, come chat with me once I am in the classroom.

Student Expectations: Come to class prepared and ready to learn. Respect yourself, your classmates, our classroom, and myself. Ask questions! Take notes during lessons. No cell phones - period. Only be told once to do something, or not do something

Disciplinary Action:

All disciplinary actions depend on the severity of the infraction and situation.

There will be zero tolerance for any disrespectful or disruptive behaviors in my classroom. These behaviors will be addressed immediately.

Homework

Homework is an important tool for students to practice content that was taught in class, OR to learn a new lesson. It helps keep students consistent and sharp! Homework will be given on a daily basis except for days of assessments or right before a long weekend/holiday. Homework is due the following day from which it was assigned. I grade homework based on completedness, not accuracy. My motto is that students try the work, and prove to me they tried it by SHOWING THEIR WORK! If a student was absent the day homework is due, then he or she is required to hand it in on the day that they return. [Please refer to the absent work section below!]

Grading

You can view the District Grading Policy here (6147.1 Evaluation of Student Performance)!

I follow the grading policy verbatim. Please familiarize yourself with it, as it is different than the elementary school policy.

All assignments given in my class will be graded. I update my gradebook fairly quickly. Please be sure that you are checking PowerSchool often! I have a bit of OCD, so my point system is as follows:

Homeworks: 5 points each (completion grade)

Classworks: 10 points each

Quizzes: 50 points each

Tests: 100 points each

Absent work

As per the district grading policy, students will have the amount of days they were out to make up their work. Students are responsible for checking with me when they return to school to see what was missed. All work will be posted on the Google Classroom for students to access as well, including PDFs of any paper assignments.

what we're learning

The Number System You will learn how to compute quotients of fractions and use them in problem solving skills, identify rational numbers on number lines, and find the absolute value of rational numbers.

Expressions and Equations You will learn how to read, write, and evaluate numerical and algebraic expressions as well as solve simple equations and inequalities.

Ratios and Proportions You will learn how to understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.

Geometry You will learn how to solve real world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

Statistics and Probability You will learn the concepts of statistical variability as well as summarize and describe distributions of data.

Assessment Corrections

As my own classroom perk, students will be allowed to make corrections on content assessments (if they scored below a 70%) by filling out an assessment correction form. Students will be required to explain why the original answer is incorrect, and then show/explain how to get the correct answer. Students will earn back half the points they have lost on corrected problems. They will be given one night to complete these corrections.

Supplies?!

It is important to be prepared for class EVERYDAY with the following items:

Your Chromebook is to be charged for the school day. Bring your charger to school everyday just in case. So many unprepareds for class will result in an administrative referral.
