Great art speaks powerfully, inspires fresh thinking, and connects us to the past. Picturing America, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities developed in cooperation with the American Library Association, invites the public to explore the nation’s history and character through art. America’s artistic heritage offers unique insight into the country’s ideals, aspirations, and shared experiences. Through these visual works, the exhibit encourages thoughtful exploration of the cultural, political, and historical threads woven into the nation’s story, helping audiences experience the humanity of history and deepen their understanding of America’s past.
Picturing America was presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in cooperation with the American Library Association, with support from multiple federal agencies, partner organizations, and private donors. NEH also acknowledged the U.S. Department of Education, Crayola LLC, and the History Channel for their role in promoting the program.
