Purdue Global Faculty Member Summits Mount Kilimanjaro, Inspiring Others to Complete Their Own Journeys

After earning her PhD and climbing nearly 18,000 feet at Mount Everest in 2018, Heather Sager was eager for the next adventure. However, a new job and a global pandemic delayed those dreams.

Fast-forward to October 2023, and Sager, now an adjunct faculty member in Purdue Global’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, set out to celebrate her birthday by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in October.

Before summiting Africa’s highest peak, Sager, along with her friend Zakiya Vallier, endured nine months of grueling, disciplined training.

“It was kind of a part-time job in itself, but it led to other changes in my life that were healthy and positive,” Sager said. “It was hard for me to say no to chocolate, but it made me really focus on eating healthier and overall holistic health.” Read more about Heather's journey.

Preparing Adult Students to Help Those Suffering from Addiction

Faculty member Lynda Mitton brings her calling to the online classroom.

For me, working in psychology and concentrating on addiction and trauma was driven by a personal motto of mine: “Go back and get the others.”

I’ve been sober just over 23 years now, but I knew there were other people out there still in the depths of it, and there are still families seeing their loved ones suffer. Being able to make that life-changing difference for others — that’s what started me down this path.

I teach full time now. Sometimes I miss working directly with patients, but I love having a hand in shaping the next generation of counselors. The ones coming up next, we’re going to turn the field over to them, and I want to do it right. I’m passionate about this field, and handing it over is a huge responsibility. I want to make sure those who are going to be helping others feel prepared to do it. Read more from Lynda.

December 1st is World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is observed on December 1 each year. It is a day of solidarity for people around the world who are affected by HIV. This is a day for voices to unite by sharing experiences, remembering those lost, and standing together in the fight against HIV.

The day is an opportunity for every community and each individual to honor the more than 32 million people who have died worldwide from AIDS-related illnesses.

Two World Health Organization public information officers started World AIDS Day in 1988 as an international day for global health. Since then, it has become an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. It’s also reserved as a day to bridge new and effective programs and policies across different sectors around HIV/AIDS.

On this World AIDS Day, Pride@Purdue Global wants to honor the millions of people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. We remember those who have lost their lives to this disease and honor the resilience of those who continue to fight against it.

Let us all come together to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and support those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Please visit and contribute to our World AIDS Day Padlet.

Please take a few minutes to complete this brief input form before EOD on November 30. Thank you!
