IB assessment measures learning over time rather than relying on a single exam. Students demonstrate understanding through a combination of coursework and externally assessed exams, including written work, projects, investigations, presentations, and oral assessments—often with opportunities for choice and real-world application. Coursework is evaluated using clear criteria and moderated by IB worldwide, with ongoing feedback and support from Purcell Marian teachers.
Below, learn how IB courses are assessed, how coursework and exams work together, how IB scores are determined, and what distinguishes IB assessment from traditional grading.
Each IB course includes several meaningful assessments that measure learning over time. These assessments are reviewed and revised by IB on a five-year course review cycle to ensure alignment with current disciplinary standards. All IB assessments fall into two categories: internal and external.
Laboratory investigations in the sciences
Mathematical explorations
Artistic performances or portfolios
Oral analyses of literary texts
IAs allow students to demonstrate sustained, discipline-specific thinking and are completed as part of regular coursework.
Most external assessments take place during the May examination session at the end of senior year.
Formats may include essays, case-study questions, or textual analysis.
Multiple-choice questions are rarely used, as IB assessments emphasize analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
IB SCORING
For each IB course, students receive a final score ranging from 7 (highest) to 1 (lowest). This score reflects combined performance across internal and external assessments. A score of 4 is generally regarded as a passing score.
Students pursuing the IB Diploma who earn passing scores in all six IB courses and successfully complete all components of the IB Core will be awarded the IB Diploma.
Additional details about Diploma requirements and pathways are outlined on The IB Diploma page.
The IB team coordinates all internal assessment deadlines to ensure balance across courses. These dates are published annually.
IB results are released in early July following the May exam session.
Families receive an unofficial score report from Purcell Marian within approximately one week of release.
The IB Coordinator may request that one official score report be sent to a college or university on behalf of each student. This request is made in late May, after seniors declare their post-graduation plans.
Additional official score reports must be requested directly through IB using this link.
