PHSEC is planning to join in on several upcoming Fridays for Future protests in Auburn. We want to make our concern about climate change and its effects evident to the City of Auburn so they might be more inclined to take serious actions.
We are currently working with the Auburn Sustainability Advisory Committee to create a plastics phase out plan for local businesses.
We are currently partnering with Tree-Plenish to offset our schools paper usage by hosting a community tree planting.
We get to occasionally volunteer at a wonderful animal rescue near us. We have helped with everything from building new animal enclosures to cleaning and organizing.
In the month of February we hosted a used electronics and batteries drive and saved hundreds of pounds of e-waste from the landfill.
We help our local animal rescue center, Gold Country Wildlife Rescue, by cutting surgical drapes to be used in animal cages. We also volunteer with many other wildlife centers in our area.
Placer High School is the only school in PUHSD that don't have any renewable energy sources! We are currently working with the PUHSD board to get the entire school district switched onto the Green100 program and take the first step toward a sustainable future. Pioneer's program might also be able to lower your own carbon footprint...
Because of the huge environmental impacts of the meat industry, we are trying to reduce the amount of meat being served at PHS and start a "Meatless Mondays" program.
We regularly volunteer with the Placer Nature Center to help with various projects centered around conservation and Eco literacy.
We regularly attend and help out at Auburn Sustainability Advisory Committee meetings sharing our views and insights on local environmental issues.
We partnered with the Gravity Water Youth Initiate to fundraise and build an energy free clean water system for Pa Cheo kindergarten school in Vietnam. This effort not only helped reduce plastic pollution in this area but also provided hundreds of young children. Visit gravitywater.org for more info
This fall we partnered with local bands to put on an benefit concert for PHSEC. We were able to bring student speakers to the stage and educate the community. You can watch our speakers and see pictures from this event on our Instagram @placer_environmental_club
We are currently working with Placer Land Trust to clean and protect local lands and parks. We host a monthly invasive species removal and trash cleanup day at Auburn School Park. This helps promote biodiversity and keep our community clean!
We started our own column in our local newspaper. WE write about environmental topics to bring awareness to them and provide people with an easy way to help.
We partnered with P.H.S. Key Club to help stop clothes waste and help those in need. All clothes are taken to local shelters.
Every week club members get together and pick up trash around Placer High School campus and other public spaces in Auburn. We often do cleanups in the American River canyon as well. This helps reduce water pollution and protect wildlife while also making our community more beautiful.
We share environmental books between club members to promote environmental awareness.
Please check out the separate web page all about our Scraps to Soil program and how you can get involved!
We saved old planter boxes on P.H.S campus and turned them into our very own pollinator garden! Unfortunately, due to a miscommunication our boxes were destroyed this fall. However, we have been working on plans to rebuild the boxes and make them even better. We have also talked to construction teams about creating a green wall on the new P.H.S. cafeteria building.
Through our Instagram, this site, and our programs we have been able to inform many citizens of Auburn on how they can help the environment. W believe education is key to saving our planet and we are almost always working on a public education project.
We created a weakly podcast focusing on a different environmental topic each week and providing ways listeners can help. Find us on Spotify, Apple Music, and anywhere else you listen to podcasts.
We are trying to eliminate the use of single-use plastic forks, spoons, knives, straws, and containers in our Placer High School cafeteria.
We worked with the Sunrise Movement to bring the Auburn Green New Deal to Auburn. The Green New Deal changes guidelines in the U.S. to be more environmentally sustainable. If passed, the Green New Deal will cut down carbon emissions and help shift from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy while creating jobs for thousands of people. We collected signatures from Auburn citizens and presented the Green New Deal during a city council meeting. Although the Green New Deal did not get passed, city council members did decide to create a sustainable advisory community for Auburn.
And so much more...
We are always working on new ideas and projects to help our community and our planet
