How did the Voyager 1 make it so far?

The Voyager 1 was able to make it pretty far before it suffered a grave computer problem that seemed to put it out of commission. It was able to go far by using Jupiter's strong and enormous gravity to hurl it towards Saturn. It was announced Nasa had restored it to working order.
