Welcome to the Placer High School Cross Country program. Our team is built on tradition, commitment, and a shared belief that success extends beyond competition. We prepare athletes not only to perform at their best, but to grow as individuals through discipline, perseverance, and teamwork.
Our program emphasizes building meaningful relationships and creating experiences that shape character, confidence, and leadership. The strength of Placer Cross Country comes from athletes who embrace the process and carry forward the tradition established by those who came before them.

What is Cross Country?
Cross country is a team running sport that emphasizes endurance, discipline, and mental strength. It requires minimal equipment and can be enjoyed for a lifetime.
Typical race distances include:
2 miles
3 miles
5,000 meters (3.1 miles)
Cross country provides athletes with the opportunity to challenge themselves while being part of a supportive team environment.
“Success is peace of mind that is the direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”
— John Wooden
At Placer High School, success is defined by effort, improvement, and personal growth. Our goal is to help each athlete reach their full potential.
Cross country is both an individual and team sport.
Varsity teams consist of 7 runners
Junior Varsity and Frosh/Soph teams may include unlimited runners
Team scoring is determined by the placement of the first five finishers
The team with the lowest total score wins
Each athlete contributes to the overall success of the team.
Equipment Guidelines
Proper training shoes are essential. Two pairs are recommended to reduce injury risk. Racing shoes are optional for beginners but recommended for varsity athletes.
A watch is an important training tool that helps athletes monitor pacing, effort, and progress.
Proper hydration is essential for performance and recovery. Athletes should drink water consistently throughout the day.
Athletes should refuel after practice with healthy snacks containing carbohydrates and protein to support muscle recovery.
Balanced meals should include:
Fruits and vegetables
Lean proteins
Whole grains
Sleep and Rest
Athletes should aim for at least 8 hours of sleep per night. Proper rest is essential for recovery, performance, and injury prevention.
Our Program Philosophy
Placer Cross Country is more than a sport—it is a community built on commitment, accountability, and support.
We emphasize:
Consistent effort and improvement
Supporting teammates
Accountability and responsibility
Pride in representing our school and community
Our athletes help carry forward a tradition built on hard work, dedication, and excellence.
