In the Lab: I am involved in the study focused on utilizing lactate threshold to investigate how heat impacts lung function during exercise. My time in the lab has deepened my interest in understanding how our physiology changes in extreme environments!
Career Goals: After graduation, I'll be working at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in the Space Systems and Technology Division. I'm also hoping to eventually pursue graduate studies in bioastronautics or biomedical engineering.
Hobbies: hiking, rock climbing, and exploring new cafes
Words of Advice: There's so much cool research being done in the world! Don't be afraid to try and get involved!

In the Lab: In the human physiology lab I worked on developing and testing new protocols for the investigation of how exercise in the heat impacts lung function. My favorite part was working with research participants during study visits and collecting data.
Career Goals: I'm going to nursing school after I graduate, with the long-term goal of becoming an NP or midwife.
Hobbies: Skiing, climbing, playing music, and thrifting!
Words of Advice: Find what you like about research and make the most of it, it's such a great opportunity that you are lucky to have at UPS!

In the Lab: In the Coffman lab, I worked on her second study investigating the impact of heat and exercise on gas exchange. I tested different methods on pilot participants, designed protocols and helped solve problems. My time in the lab allowed me to get hands-on experience and develop my skills with actual participants.
Career Goals: I am working towards going to dental school. My ultimate goal is to become an orthodontist or general dentist.
Hobbies: Baseball and cooking
Words of Advice: Go into research expecting to not succeed at everything. My research experience rounded out my academic skill set and I ended up doing a lot of things that I was not very good at before doing research.

In the Lab: In the Coffman lab, I worked on our first study investigating the impact of heat and exercise on gas exchange in the lungs. My time working in this lab helped me realize my interest in environmental and exercise physiology, especially high altitude physiology.
Career Goals: I am currently working as a Mountaineering Guide, but I aspire to earn a PhD in Physiology.
Hobbies: Skiing, rock climbing, mountain biking
Words of Advice: Research is not always straightforward but being able to find joy in small successes makes the challenges much easier to work through.

In The Lab: In the human physiology lab I worked in the environmental chamber studying DLCO! I conducted lung function tests in both (very) hot and thermoneutral conditions during exercise on a cycle ergometer. I got to use the super fun metabolic cart to collect information such as gas exchange data, VO2 max, and skin temperature throughout each visit! I also collected vitals on subjects such as blood pressure, oxygen saturation, core temperature, hydration levels, and blood samples. On top of being a part of data collection, I am currently working on data analysis and writing up a manuscript of this research with Mira!
Career Goals: My career goal is to become a Physical Therapist! I worked as a Physical Therapist Aide at a clinic over the summer and absolutely loved it!
Hobbies: I enjoy swimming (competitively and for fun!), embroidering, being outside, going on coffee walks, petting dogs, and visiting different
plant stores around Tacoma!
Words of Advice: Don’t be afraid to reach out to professors and ask about their research! Getting involved in research as an undergrad is such an incredible opportunity and it has truly made my college experience unique and unforgettable.

In the Lab: I was a part of the DLCO research study where we investigated the impact of heat and exercise on lung diffusion. My involvement in the research primarily included administering pulmonary function tests and collecting physiological data.
Career Goals: I am attending graduate school for my doctorate in Occupational Therapy!
Hobbies: Reading, hiking, cooking and playing soccer
Words of Advice: Research is not a perfect process but have fun with it and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

In the Lab: I ran a validation study on the environmental chamber in the Exercise Physiology lab in Weyerhaeuser. Several wireless temperature and humidity sensors were placed along various areas in the chamber and these numbers were compared to the data points gathered from the environmental chamber's own sensors. Other data was collected to test the capacity of the chamber under various likely conditions, such as the drop in conditions when the door was opened, as well as how long it would take to reach a certain set point.
Career Goals: I am enrolled in the University of Puget Sound's Doctorate of Physical Therapy program, class of 2023. I am leaning towards a job in pediatric or adult neurologic physical therapy.
Words of Advice: Always ask for help when you need it. Never be afraid to ask a lot of questions!
