Welcome to Parsippany-Troy Hills Schools Elementary Music!
In our program, your child will learn the fundamentals of music and creative expression in a welcoming environment. Throughout elementary school, students will learn the elements of music: sound, melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, form, and expression. Each year, students will build upon these skills and participate in performances to showcase their musical achievements!
Kindergarten: Kindergarten is an exciting year where students first discover the basic elements of music inclusive of melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, and expression through songs and games. In addition, we start exploring the various instrument families.
1st Grade: First graders expand upon the musical elements from Kindergarten and begin creating rhythms using various note values. Also, we continue learning about pitch through simple songs and games. Building on pitch and rhythm, we will create simple ostinatos to support a melodic line.
2nd Grade: Second graders start to explore note reading in preparation for the introduction of flutophone. They will learn the parts of the staff and how to read in treble clef. This will be combined with their previous knowledge of pitch and rhythm to start playing multi-layered songs.
3rd Grade: One of the highlights of third grade is learning the flutophone! The flutophone is an introductory instrument that teaches precursory skills for playing an instrument and helps students with many comprehension skills that can be applied in the music classroom, and in their homeroom as well. Students are thrilled to showcase their learning at an end-of-year performance.
4th Grade: Fourth-grade students are introduced to choral singing. They are tasked with mastering their respective voice parts for their culminating performance in the winter and/or spring seasons.
5th Grade: Fifth-grade students are the maestros of elementary musicians. They are able to refine previously learned skills in choral singing in preparation for more advanced middle school ensembles.
